I was at the local rock gym this past Friday and I was climbing around and I don't think that I stretched enough. I must have pulled a muscle or a ligament or tendond or something b/c it hurts like a mother now and the pain won't go away. The pain continues to grow and occationally my arm gets num. I hope that its all okay in there but who knows. I climbed on it this past weekend and have been doing some yard work which I think hasn't helped it at all. But I have to climb. I wonder if this has anything to do with my cronically dislocated radialhead. My elbow is a little goofy. Oh well, I will just take some good old pain killers. spyder

Hey Spyder, I'm definitly not an expert, but I've just been through something that seems similar to what you're going through. First of all, there have been a ton of posts on this topic recently. Next, take it easy RIGHT NOW!! You want to curb this and prevent further injury. I tried to keep climbing through the pain and my arms just got worse (and more useless). Try taking a good week off and work the supporting muscles, but do nothing that involves pulling. I did this and everything seems fine. I'm climbing about 4 days a week now but am not going to start any pull-up training (no diaper jokes please ) again until I'm sure that my arms (ie. elbows) can handle it. Alex

Follow esim's advice, go SEE A DOCTOR. Anything anyone tells you here, will largely be uneducated speculation. Uneducated speculation BAD. - d.

I am a doctor, and I agree you should see one in person. It's difficult to make a diagnosis over the phone or internet without the benefit of an examination in person. Your mechanic would say the same about your car's engine. You could be dealing with a torn muscle (strain), torn ligament (sprain), inflamed tendon (tendonitis, e.g., epicondylitis or tennis elbow), dislocation, fracture, or nerve impingement, most of which will not show up on x-ray, but depend on biomechanical testing, palpation, etc. All of this does not help you narrow anything down, so if I were you, I'd play it safe and simply see a physician who has experience in this area.

i can usually determine a car's problem w/a good description of its troubles over the phone. your logic makes no sense to me and i am now confused... i put my vote in again for pain killers and manliness

Sounds like tennis elbow. I had the same problem when I started a really hard training regime last year. I treated it witih Ibuprofen, a heating pad, and had to take three weeks off of climbing or doing anything that stressesd it. Take the time to work on your endurance and leg strength and let it rest.

Sounds good. I've been iceing it and doing hot compress as well. Also some stretches and stuff. Pain killers have helped to. I've been using some of my dad's codine pain killers. They help a lot with the pain when its the worst. Any who, I'll just take it easy. spyder

I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV and I know what you should do. Don't spend your time hopped up on codine since it's a highly addictive drug (I got addicted to it when I broke my femur a number of years back). Take it easy for a few days resting it. Still hurts after a couple, go to someone who can help you. Hint: it's not here at rc.com....

Don't listen to the 'pain killers and manliness' BS. I tried that and all I've gotten out of it is a trip to the doctor's anyways, AND an injury that's not healing. I haven't been able to climb hard in months because of it. GO SEE A DOCTOR ASAP! -Sheppe

Take (2) aspirin...an call me in the morning and when checking the oil...do it while it is hot...an use your fingers... If you do go to the doctor...make sure to get the works..." the finger wiggle " Don/t be fooled by the cheapazz docs...they just do the " turn your head an cough " Rest is last choice...but is all up to you...to watch your friends have fun without you You could flip burgers for them while they climb...

The same thing you described happened to me two summers ago, and I ended up with a paralized thumb. Now, it took six months for the movement to come back to my thumb. It started with tendonitis (which is just about what you are describing), and then, once that healed, I could not bend my thumb at the 2nd joint (the one closest to the tip of the thumb). Keep an eye on it, and go see a hand surgeon (yes, there is such a thing). Tell him what happened to you happened to a friend, and he (I) ended up with complete-partial palsy of the nerve that "drives" the thumb and forefinger. I could be wrong, but I would at least have it checked out. having a paralized thumb kept me from climbing for 6 months, so if you wanna keep climbing, get it looked at.

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you. Everyone here has advice they would like to give because it's human nature to want to help out. I always tell my patients that they will receive advice from the media, their friends and family. Listen to the latter two and ignore them all. Your primary care physician should be able to tell whether or not you are dealing with a tendonitis as in lateral epicondylitis (or tennis elbow), a muscle strain, nerve impingement syndrome (in which you may have numbness with sensory or motor deficits), but keep in mind that you can also have numbness with tendonitis. If necessary, he/she can refer you to either an orthopedist, or even a neurologist if nerve involvement is suspected. Neurologists and physiatrists can perform EMG (electromyelogram) and NCT (nerve conduction tests). There are other causes of elbow pain as well: contusion, fracture, dislocation, referred pain, etc. Of course, we have a saying in Medicine. If you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras. Then again, misdiagnoses often result from assuming the obvious which is why I still say see your doctor. I can give you the best educated guess, and it would be a good one and maybe even right, but it would still be a "guess" without having the benefit of examining you in person. Hope this helps.
