Hey guys...

I just bought this brand new Mammut rope from ebay... I know a little sketchy... But when I received it it was new still in the plastic strap. Upon flicking it to inspect it I noticed a small fray on the rope. I have attached several picture of it .

Do you think I should climb on it? Is there something I can do to it to preserve it and somehow repair it. It's located like 15m in on a 60m rope.

No. Send it to me. I'll dispose of it free of charge.

I probably wouldn't climb on it because I'm a bit OCD but I'm sure most people around here would climb on it... and just pay attention to the area. It's not a core shot.

It has to make you think though, if that can happen to a rope that is inside the plastic, what else could have happened to it?

I hate to say it but you shouldn't be buying ropes off eBay. Especially a rope!!!

It's fine but I'd be pissed if I bought a brand new rope with a nick in it.

Contact the seller and ask to return the rope- no, demand to do so. State that despite the packaging this is not new condition.

Normally, that little bit of wear would be meaningless to me, but there is no reason for that on a new rope as it makes you wonder how it was treated prior to purchase.

I guess it depends on how good of a deal you got on it. Not to say that you should ever take shorts on climbing gear that protects your life, but that pull can happen the first time you use the rope.

If you didn't get a stellar deal, I'd return it since you are trusting your life to it. Other than that it's pretty minor and I would climb on it. Kind of alleviates the 1st, "dang, nicked my rope" that you get with new gear! Wink

As far as buying ropes off ebay, that's a bit too general. Ebay has become a portal for thousands of REAL shops that have expanded their businesses globablly (think Amazon). Even Altrec sells on Ebay and last time I checked (this morning) they are a major online retailer. In fact most mountain shops today run a dual website / ebay site since they get more exposure through ebay. In fact I would venture to say that Ebay has done quite a bit to keep small business afloat.

personally, i dont buy softgoods from anyone but a retailer. now, if you did that through ebay, thats fine- whatever.

that said, you can do two things.

first, check for flat spots around that nick- there shouldnt be any, but check anyway. if there are, then toss the line. if not, then its fine as angry said.

to repair, just run a lighter over the spot- should contract the fibers most of the way. dont hold it over, just gently pass it back and forth. it might be a bit crispy if you over do it for a little while, but it should otherwise be fine.
