Hi everybody ! I'm French and will spend a year in L.A. But as I"m a climber too, I"m looking for something that weird Frenchpeople call a "climbing club". You know, that sort of association where you can climb indoor without paying the private gyms' 600$ annual fees and then make friends to go outside to loose together in the nature ? Does anyone know if that sort of things exists in L.A. ? Thanks a lot and see you burning at the bottom of the cliff !

I think your options are (1) meet climbers in the local gym, (2) join a climbing club, or (3) meet climbers online. The gym options gives you the opportunity to assess potential partners in a relatively safe environment. It's not free, but you don't have to commit to an annual membership either. You can pay by the day or the month. Climbing clubs make it easy to meet people, but often these clubs are organized more for socializing than for climbing, and consequently the level of climbing competence in the clubs is low (that goes for safety too, although every club will emphatically deny it). Hence, if you're looking for serious, committed climbers, clubs probably aren't the way to go. The potential risks and rewards of meeting climbers online are obvious.
In reply to: Thanks a lot and see you burning at the bottom of the cliff ! I've heard that same thing from a couple of ex-girlfriends. Jay

Over here they are referred to as "co-ops". Essentially private gyms with dues. There is one in San Luis Obispo, but that is a bit too far to drive from LA. http://www.rockclimbing.com/...d;page=unread#unread Don't know of another one closer, but I'm not local. T

Missleading yes, but attractive isn't it ? I knew frustrated climbers who are working today couldn't resist to aswer my question. Sorry jiriarte but on friday I try to find other way to get some fun. As I'm not yet in L.A., I'm preparing my travel through california, to burningman for exemple. Take a look if you want some funny stuff : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDA4hTEiqcU&hl=fr By the way, thank you guys for your aswers. I didn"t know that outdoor associations existed. I'm gonna take a look at your links scotchie. And jt512, you talk about the risk of meeting climbers online, but have you informed your ex about it before they decided to join you for a climbing/burning session? See you guys !

I'd say you should go to some gyms (just for the day fee) when they are most crowded. Ask as many people as possible who has a woody. Pun intended. Or post flyers in the gyms asking people who has a woody or an indoor climbing wall at home. It's fucking LA, there has to be a bunch of angsty climbers who have built indoor walls in their garages.

Get a part time job at a gym you like. You'll meet everyone and climb for free...

Also, that way the smoke is less likely to bother anyone who doesn't like my kind of fire.
