looking for a durable crag bag?

I need something to hold all of my trad gear plus some extras.

I was thinking about the black diamond touchstone haul bag. Is there anything bad about this bag.

I don't have lots of money.

Is there a better bag out there that is this size and cost?

all of my friends carry this:

http://metoliusclimbing.com/haul_packs.html

if you're looking for just a haul bag style pack.

there are some other options.

the Metolius Cragstation is a pretty sweet bag.

CAMP's Rox + crag bag is even better, and i think its pretty reasonably priced as well, but i forget the retail on it.

there's a solid following of FISH gear (fishproducts.com, i think)- basically the poor man's (but not poor quality by any stretch- in fact, in most instances, its higher quality than big name) climbing gear.

look at Fish. i have the smaller haul bag, and i use it exclusively as a crag bag. it is bomb-proof and works great, not to mention that Fish is an awesome little company.

good lord, 4000 cu inches??? what for? the biggest pack i've ever carried was 45L (3000-ish cubic inches), and that had a full double rack in it and bivy gear! short of doing a wall...normally, 2300 cubic inches is more than adequate for any crag day.

well, anyway, Metolius carries a full line of haul bags as well- just poke around their site- http://metoliusclimbing.com/quarter_dome.html is just one example.

also check the FISH site- he carries full sized haul bags as well.

edited to add: Cilogear's Wally Pack may be perfect for you- the big one is enormous...almost have to be around 4000, maybe more. cilogear.com, i think- just search it.

well i was thinking about getting a bag that big because i want to use it also as storage. Right now all my gear is laying on my floor. I am going away to college here soon, so i was looking for a bag that i could use to hold all my gear and also i just can grab it and go. I have a metolius porta-cord and i want a bag at least three times that size. that is why i was going for metolius quarter-dome or bd touchstone.

The metolius haul bags are super nice (I have the smallest one). Definitely a good thing to hold a load of climbing gear, plus they are super durable and multi purpose. The downside is that they are not all that comfortable, being made for hauling, that is to be expected. I hear that the Yates haul bags are more comfortable, but they are a bit too expensive for me. But if you don't care about a little discomfort and want a big bag that can take a beating, they are definitely worth it.

a friend has the touchstone, i have the smaller packsize one, forget the name (both BD).
I'd get the touchstone or similar size if i had it to do over again.......if i was gonna use it as a crag pack.........and if I was only gonna have one.

and no, they really aren't all that comfy in general for longer approaches, but very able to multi-task.

The Wally noted above would be the most comfortable for sure, but Cilogear wont be making them for a bit (out real soon I hear) and you will pay a lot of scratch for that finely crafted bag. You might consider the Fish as well.

http://www.fishproducts.com/...g/productlinefs.html

Here's the budget that is bigger than you want but sells for $112.00

I caught the BD Stubby on sale over the winter for around $60/70 bucks. I absolutely love it. It holds a 70M, Full rack, and everything else you would need for a day of cragging. It's also big enough to do an overnight if you want to get into that as well. My favorite feature about haul bags is that they "stand-up" and stay open on top, so its very easy to load all your gear back in your bag and jump over to the next route in record time.

My suggestion is to get a cheep but durable Rubbermaid tub, or a duffel bag to keep the gear in and a smaller pack to carry.

The added advantage is the tub or bag may not look so obviously valuable sitting in the back of a vehicle, or in your room.

Vegastradguy, what size of the metolius haul packs do your friends/you use, and how comfortable are they to carry? I've been looking around for a good cragging/climbing pack and these seem nice as they're made of really durable material; I wouldn't have to worry about throwing them around and beating the crap outta them.

they all lug around the Express, i think. i cant imagine it being that comfy, but they dont seem to mind.

im not currently using a metolius bag for cragging- that CAMP Rox+ or my Cilogear usually does that duty.

For some super durable no-frills bags, check out deuter. I snagged an older one at a gear swap, the thing is a tank.

If you are looking for a haulbag style crag bag, get a FISH atom smasher. Made in the USA. cheaper than metolius.

I'd note that haulbags don't have suspensions, so they don't carry as well as a pack with a frame, but they're great for short approach stuff.
