What is the consensus on best bouldering near Boulder? Estes Park/Eldo????? I plan to relocate and was disappointed in Flag mtn.

that sounds like a Flagstaff, AZ reply (I'm from there), the question was "best". Flag mtn was choss. Horsetooth is a drive as is Estes. Is Eldo any good? -or just better off bringing gear there?

Yeah, I guess that was a "sum it up" answer...but it really depends. Morrison is great, Camp Dick, whole bunch of nice developing areas in the Estes area (Lion's Den, Big Elk Meadows, Lumpy). Then if you're a pull hard kinda person there is Mt. Evans and the Park. I like to go up to Redcliff (vail area) for nice granite bouldering. Then the Flatirons are chock full of boulders as well. Don't forget about Carter Lake, or Horsetooth (I like Carter better, but there's a fee). Eldo supposedly has classics, but I've never bouldered there. Soooo...it is everywhere!!! There's just tons. The ones I listed were just a few of the bigger areas. There's enough to make you want to quit working! BUT!!! Bring your gear too!

No worries...for all the smack people talk, there is a lifetime of climbing out here. I haven't even listed all the sport / trad areas!

If you think Flagstaff isn't good, Boulder is probably not the place for you--Flag is better than most of the other options around here (IMHO). All the local spots are worth checking out (to me that is Eldo, Sanitas (not much of a destination but a nice place to hike), Flatirons (very spread out), Boulder Canyon (also spread out, not a lot there unless you you're willing to explore). But Flag is about as good as it gets, at least for areas very close to Boulder. I think Carter Lake is very good also, but again, you may be happier elsewhere. Edit: forgot to mention--if you want to check out Flagstaff again and are bouldering at or below about V5 (Flag ratings (hard)), post up and I'll give examples of problems that I think are high quality. Maybe you just didn't find the good stuff.

ha, NO. I don't think you read me correctly. I AM from Flagstaff, AZ and love it. I've lived there for 14 years so I think our Bouldering is bar none. I was saying that Flagstaff MOUNTAIN in Boulder was choss and was just trying to get some preferences on other areas in Boulder besides the few I knew of. Thank you though. AND yes I know I should stay in Flagstaff, AZ, but life may be leading me to Boulder that's why I'm scouting it out.

Maybe we need to say Flag, CO or Flag, AZ each time to avoid confusion. In sum, I think Flag, CO has the best bouldering that is very close to Boulder (that's confusing too), so I meant that if you think Flag, CO is choss (and you're not the only one), I think you may not like the bouldering around here very much. The hard climbing crew likes RMNP and Mt. Evans, but they have short seasons (both high altitude). Best lower elevation stuff at all close is probably Carter and Horsetooth (Ft. Collins area, not Boulder). If you're here and want to give Flag, CO another chance (and boulder V5 or so or below, although I can point out some harder), feel free to email me and I'll show you best stuff I know at Flag, CO--it may change your mind a bit. But Flag, CO is sure no Hueco or Bishop or anything; it's just the local area.

sure thanks for the scoop. I may hit you up next spring when I plan to move to Boulder. I definitely didn't get much time in at FLag, CO so I really shouldn't be calling it choss anyway. RMNP is sweet!
