I am thinking of going to climb in Brazil in December. Does anyone know what the the climbing is like? Is it far from Rio? Is it too hot? Any information will be great.
Thanks

The Climbing mag had an article about Brazil in #245, january 2006.
$9.99 for a back issue.

(The full story about Caldwell on El Cap is in another issue, though. Despite the cover pic...)

There is actually really good climbing in Rio proper. I was there a few years ago and did a six pitch climb called Poa do Ascucar (sp?) There is also supposed to be some nice beach side bouldering and sport routes. Think Wolfgang Gullich even put up a 5.14 in Rio.

Interesting! So, besides the magazine back issue, are there any online resources? This seems like a perfect "several birds with one trip" destination.

Pão de Açúcar, or Sugarloaf, is the mountain that has the cable car running up to the top.

I was in Rio 18 years ago and I took the cable car. As we neared the top, I looked down to see a couple climbing up. It looked absolutely beautiful.

One of these days I'll get back and climb it.

The Gullich route you're talking about must be "Southern Comfort" which is a short, power 13c on a big boulder at the base of Sugarloaf. Back in the day (I believe) it was the hardest technical route in South America, but now the kids around here now are getting strong enough to onsight stuff like that.

To the original poster: why don'y you check out the route section in rockclimbing.com? It's not perfect, but there's a lot of stuff there. Much more information than someone could write in a post. For example: to find the place dreyday3000 is talking about, go to:

http://www.rockclimbing.com/..._Metropolitan_/Urca/

Apparently the best sport climbing in Brazil is not on the granite "morros" but on a much more compact rock somewhere in the mountains, but I've never been there and I don't know where it is.

Thanks for the informative post. Pretty refreshing to see such in depth response to a legitimate inquiry.
