Does anyone know if it's possible to climb Chapel Pond Slab in the Adirondacks without ropes? I have seen a few pictures of climbers on it and it appears that you can send it without ropes.

yea its called free soloing. there are a couple of very moderate routes, regular route 5.5, and empress 5.5, that are very popular free solos. some of the pitches are super run out anyways so even with rope you are only placing a couple pieces of pro

funny story: we were starting the empress and the leader was a noob and pretty sketched that he could only get 3 pieces including a rusted weisner pin. He was taking forever. 2 fairly well known locals show up joe and emilie w/ approach shoes and chalk bags. I say I dare you to ask him if this is where the trail goes. So they start soloing the regular route and as Joe gets near him he says "am I off route?" "it seems real chossy over here". not reccomended for a beginer though.

Jip182 wrote: some of the pitches are super run out anyways so even with rope you are only placing a couple pieces of pro ^^^This iz korrekt. I did the Regular Route this summer and one of the pitches had about 90' of runout. (Might've been P3 leading up to the Twin Cracks belay...) Fortunately, it's easy climbing (5.5 slab).
carabiner96 wrote: ropes would be nice to get down, though. ^^^Also korrekt. IIRC, there is a fixed line somewhere on one of the descent routes that makes it *possible* to get down w/o ropez, but I've read that it's easy to miss the fixed line. Much safer to bring ropez and rap from one of a couple of rap stations.

I've learned when on slab, its best just to keep moving. Sit in one spot too long and you will think you're slipping.

I've soloed CP slab many times. The descent, unroped, can be unpleasant to dangerous. One of my favorite easier laps is to solo the Regular to the base of Bob's Knob, then to downclimb Bob's Knob standard (5.3 for a few moves). You might go up the Bob's Knob standard first, so you know the way. This lap keeps you on clean, solid rock the whole way, and still gets you 450 ft or so off the deck.
