I was just wondering if anyone knew how many rock gyms there are in Canada and as a side note, how many retailers in Canada. (Retailers of climbing gear...) Thanks in advance

To be honest, that's tough to answer. Do places like MEC, Valhalla Pure, Europe Bound (etc.) each count as a single retailer, or do they get counted based on the number of locations? For gyms, this is all I can think of off the top of my head: British Columbia: Cliffhanger (Vancouver) Cliffhanger (Coquitlam) The Edge (North Vancouver) Squamish Bouldering Co-op (Squamish... obviously) Cliffside [I think that's the name] (Kamloops) Manitoba Vertical Adventures (Winnipeg) Ontario: Gravity (Hamilton) Climber's Rock (Burlington) Joe Rockhead's (Toronto) TCA (Toronto) Rock Oasis (Toronto) True North Climbing (Toronto) Guelph Grotto (Guelph... again, obviously) Vertical Reality (Ottawa) Coyote's (Ottawa) Quebec: Allez-Up (Montreal) That's obviously only a partial list of what's out there. BC, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec are going to have quite a few more outside of my list. Most of the maritime provinces are going to have at least one. Saskatchewan has at least one gym, I believe. You could probably find a half decent list of climbing gyms in Canada somewhere, but new gyms pop up, gyms go under, some gyms stop listing themselves anywhere etc. so there's no guarantee that the information is accurate.

It's roughly 92 gyms across Canada... Ontario sports the most, with Alberta 2nd and BC third...it's tough to get people in flat-land-katchewan to climb I guess because they only have 1... As for retailers, I was going for shops, so each MEC counts as 1 (there are 13 I think) and after that I looked at Coast Mountain, Valhal etc... The numbers for retail are way more inaccurate so I won't bother posting... Thanks

92 is actually a bit higher than I would have figured. I wonder if that includes university gyms or not. Coast Mountain... I thought many of their locations ditched climbing gear and that most of the stores fell in line with the rest of the Forzani Group, mainstream-ish feel. I could be wrong. Climbing gear, specifically, doesn't seem to be an immensely lucrative market in most parts of Canada. Just out of curiosity, what are you looking up this information for?

92 included Uni gyms... I included Coast Mountain just because they are selling some gear still (minimal yes...) I am looking at bringing in a new climbing product for North America and I just wanted to get an idea of densities for gyms and retail on our land...
