i love to boulder and sometimes do routes. lately i've wanted to get my belly button pierced, but i'm wondering if it will interfere with climbing. i've talked to one girl who took her belly button piercing out after she started climbing because it got caught on her harness and popped out when she was bouldering. does it really interfere that much?

Sounds like she was fat.

Why was she wearing a harness while bouldering? I take off rings while I climb - I would think anything that is hooked through your body would be a potential injury waiting to happen while climbing. Maybe a belly button ring wouldn't be likely to catch on a rock, but do you really want to find out?

I had my navel pierced long before I started climbing and continued to wear a bar-bell shaped ring in it for my first year of climbing. I took leader falls with my piercing in and nothing ever got caught on my harness or on rocks. I eventually took it out because I started thinking how bad it would be if it did get pulled out by my harness...shudder. Matter of personal opinion, but I would take it out if I was doing anything other than bouldering.

It doesn't matter much what activity you're doing, or what you're wearing. Any jewelry can get caught some way or another. Anything might get ripped off, or hurt you, or get damaged. It's always wise to remove all your jewelry, even if it's hidden, and stuff it in a safe pocket in your backpack, or leave it in the car. At home, even! Then, when you're off the rocks, you put it back on.

Leave it on. That way you can use it as a hitch when you are not climbing, so you don't get lost.

It's a shame that this question is only "for girls," because I had a traumatic experience involving a TCU and a Prince Albert ring that is relevant to this discussion.

Any jewlery can get cought at any time. If I was you I would take the pericing out or at least put a slab of athletic tape over it to keep it from snagging.

Is the TCU ok? Well, let's just say that the experience gave me a new perspective on the forces a person should subject their gear to.

I suppose if catching on clothing was a consistent issue on a day to day basis, a clit ring could be quite problematic. I should think that the healing period would be more of an issue than anything else.

Climbing was fine most of the time, but every once and a while on a lead fall the rope would go tight right near the healing piercing. WOW did that hurt! Between that and the fact that I played keeper in lacrosse and constantly took shots in the chest over the healing piercing, well, lets just say the piercing didn't last as long as I would've liked given the pain I put in to get it...

This seems like the sort of problem that could easily be solved by pre-adjustment and tighter leg loops. Kind of like a lot of guys complaining about crushing their nuts with their harness.
