Climbing Gyms have classes, both indoor and out. Do a quick google search, you may have multiple options.

Are you actually in the city, or in the suburbs? In terms of gyms, there is Go Vertical in the city, two locations for the Philadelphhia Rock Gym in the suburbs (one in Oaks, one in Valley Township), Cliff Hangers and Reading Rocks farther out. EMS and REI have outdoor trips in warmer weather as well...

Regarding this question: If you are in south Philly or near the PA/DE border, the Delaware Rock Gym is a much better alternative to the aforementioned gyms. Cleaner, better parking, less crowded (with few rug rats), much better route setting, more frequent route changes, sensible rules. I've done them all (and several more in other areas of the country) and DRG is heads above any of the Philly gyms. They do not offer outdoor classes, but they do have introductory classes for indoor climbing and leading. TS

(unless i missed the sarcasm)

(unless i missed the sarcasm) No sarcasm. You're entitled to your opinion. I named at least 7 reasons where DRG surpasses the others. You are well within your right to disagree. Philly Rock Gym (Oaks) has a slightly larger bouldering area. Other than that, IMHO, Philly gyms are inferior in many ways. If you are happy where you go, great. As long as you are having fun, all is well. TS

it's not an opinion; the routes at de rock gym stay up for a while compared to philly's Go Vertical. not to mention there's much more wall space, routes with roof climbing, far higher routes (50 foot walls), grading that makes sense (DE's grades are about two to three number grades higher than what you find in nature), larger, there's a locker room, VERY frequent route changes, etc. Don't get me wrong, de rock gym is fun, like i said-- i enjoy visiting it, and go often as a change of pace in the cold weather-- but i don't think your statements are very fair at all, especially when talking to a new climber who lives in the city. If i had to pick a gym outside of the city to climb, it would be to Elite (south Jersey) first, DE second. But there's honestly not a reason to make the trip if you live in philly if all you're looking to do is learn to climb. It's only a portion of the gym, and it's not a great pic, but there's 13,500 square feet of surface that looks like this:
