My girlfriend wants to start climbing, but she wants to keep her hands soft and she doesn't want any calluses to develop. She wants to climb for mild exercise indoors and as part of physical therapy to help with overcoming muscle spasms from back surgery. She doesn't like yucky tape. Are there gloves out there for her? If so, where can I get some?

Well, there's actually a reasonable list on this site already: list. Pretty much anything that's going to effectively protect against calluses is going to hinder performance a fair bit. If she's not climbing more than one or two days a week, moisturizing and basic care will keep her hands from getting too gnarly. I believe that back in the day they referred to this as "suck it up princess."

It's probably not a good idea to try teaching her how to crack climb.

Keep her on easy jug hauls, not much you can do about it. Or maybe try some biking gloves. Horrible for climbing, but great for riding a bike, which seems like the better option

If she climbs long enough, the callouses will go away anyways. My skin used to feel like sandpaper, but now, it is fairly smooth.

Moisturize afterwards. That should work while she's concerned with this. Eventually, she may transition to "I'm a climber, I don't wand anything that will make my hands soft!"

Have her try some climb on cream. I use it occasionally when my hands are really gnarly and it works great. It's greasy and smelly but it's amazing.

OK. Sorry i don't want nasty callused up hands when i engage in sexual activity with my boyfriend. I live with him and we have a bouldering cave in our bedroom so it isnt about hanging out with him. I see him every day. He wants to help me fix my back problems and he is skilled at bouldering so why should i pay for yoga? or some other lame activity if i like climbing AND just dont want to have my hands look like a dudes. I just figured maybe someone would be helpful. if you dont know of anyway then dont waste mine and your time trying to sound cool.

In reply to: " with my boyfriend" In reply to: "My girlfriend wants to start climbing," does he know about her My girlfriend has been climbing for over 10 years and there are no issues. Just climb and have fun. or don't if you're so worried about it. Climbing with gloves will not work and "we will mock you a second time!"- french guys ,Monty python.

Best solution: Get a pumice stone (or sand paper) and some badgers or burt's bees hand salve. Most high level climbers sand their callouss because hard carouses tear easier then supple skin. Its not that hard to sand off callouses and keep your hands in reasonably smooth condition. 2nd best solution: Climbing in gloves suck and as such the only gloves actually designed to be climbed in are ones intended for mixed or alpine climbing (climing with ice tools usually in the cold etc...). Go to a good store and try them on if possible as they need to fit well to work. 3d best solution: Atlas style gardening gloves. The type with the cloth back and rubber palm. These suck to climb in only slightly more then mixed climbing gloves.

Even so, the answers you asked for are have been presented in what amounts to less than five minutes worth of reading. Let's not kid ourselves that your time is so valuable that you can't spare five minutes of your day.
