Not too much information about this accident, which took place in upstate New York.

In reply to: A 40 year-old man died Sunday after he fell nearly 50 feet trying to scale an ice wall near Fawns Leap waterfall on Route 23A in the Town of Hunter, said Maureen Wren, a spokeswoman for the Department of Environmental Conservation. Daniel Pawlik, a resident of Stamford, Conn., was flown by helicopter to Albany Medical Center where he was treated for severe injuries and later died, said Wren. It took nearly 30 minutes for the mountain's specially trained fire and rescue team to pull the man to safety. The investigation is continuing. Authorities expect to receive the results of an autopsy report later today.

In reply to: GREENE COUNTY, N.Y. -- A man has died following a 50 foot fall while ice climbing in Catskills State Park. According to police in Greene County, Daniel Pawlik of Stamford, Connecticut was apparently free climbing without safety ropes or other gear. A climber discovered Pawlik around noon Sunday, suffering from a head injury. There is no word how long he was laying there before he was found. Pawlik was sent to Albany Medical Center where he died Sunday night.

There is more info over on NEIce.com. Apparently, he fell from the top while setting a toprope anchor, or walking to/from the anchor. The Catskills ice routes are notorious for steep, rocky, loose topouts, so footing can be treacherous near the edge. Very sad.

When something like this happens I kind of wish climbers had some way of sending off one of their own in style. 7 dudes and solemn pipes or something.
We should all buy a few bottle rockets and when one of our own is lost we should all agree that on midnight of their passage exactly 10 days after the fact we all cook off a rocket. Be kind of a cool tribute. Be really cool to be out in your own hood and see a few rockets join yours in remembrance.
Call me sentimental I guess. For this climber and his family I am very sorry. I wish I could say something neat here but a somber good-bye will have to do. I've started tying ribbons on a piece of tubular webbing every time I hear of a climber lost doing what they loved. It goes with me every time I climb. Someday if it's my turn I hope a climber will get it and carry on the tradition.
Climbers are some of the most amazing people I've ever met and they deserve to be remembered.
