Despite the fact that my friend programmed it - I'm proclaiming it the BEST climbing game ever - you can download the Demo and play that all the way out and if you want upgrade to the full version.
Support a climber - and well - be a badass at a rock climbing game!

This game takes virtual climbing as far as it needs to go. You can tell that it was built by an actual climber. Very fun AND distracting.

As a beta tester, I played the game the entire way through. Trust me, it is addicting and fun the whole way through. Totally worth it.

Dynoing off of crimps is so last bouldering season. Dynoing to and from slopers is what is really hot right now. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if all of the crimp dynos got downgraded within the next year or so.

The game has a sort of steep learning curve at the beginning, but once you figure it out, it gets to be a lot more fun.

If I'm not mistaken this game is a one man labor of love and not a 100 person team of designers, programmers, and marketers funded by venture capitalists.
Plus, props from me for the 8 bit theme! It's always nice to see things focus on function rather than form.

It could be done. But given the necessary capitulations to capture a larger marketing segment than the 10% of climbers who also play video games, you would inevitably end up with guns, weird physics, annoying stereotyped characters, or all of the above.
For reference: the climbingbuildering in Infamous for the PS3 is actually quite pretty to look at with almost acceptable physics. However, if gamers had to deal with pump and other endurance issues the flying around shooting electricity part wouldn't be as fun.
Really it is the same reason that all sports games suck. Either they are realistic and boring(Olympics), based on nerdy statistical masturbation(football, basketball, baseball), or completely unrealistic(skateboarding, snowboarding, some team sports games)
