I am flying w// my gear and plan to check my stuff, including chalk.

Anyone have any info on whether or not the white dust might be construed as anthrax? I am putting it w/ my shoes and a 'biner so maybe they will figure it out. I think labeling it will arouse suspicion... Any ideas?

i travel all the time with my bouldering gear. what i found works best is to keep your chalk bag empty and just bring a still sealed bag of chalk and just fell it when you get there. i normally do that when flying out of the country, if you are staying in the us there should be no problem.

I had no problems with chalk flying around in Hawaii when I had my shoes and chalkbag in the bag that was searched (they couldn't recognize the biner on the x-ray). I guess it would depend on the locals, but regardless, you're not going to have any more trouble than explaining what it is. :)

its worse when its in a ziplic for example, because they WILL assume it is coccaine and that isnt good. i almost took a large ziploc bad full of finely ground chalk in my carry-on, but instead put it in my checked bag

Throw in an issue of R&I or Climbing. I just flew from Japan then various hops across the US without a hitch. 2 ropes, 2 chalk bags, and my rack. That's how I did it. Plus when you get stopped for the "Extra" security check you can baffel the TSA attendants with your "strange" stuff. They don't know what it is nor do they understand it; they just flag you through.

Edit: If your rack isn't covered by some type of insurance I.E. home owners/renters/other insurance HAND CARRY your rack. Most airlines will reimburse you for lost or damaged luggage. Not to exceed $100.00 in total cost.

You can get one of those small dry bags that boaters use and just put your chalkbag, extra chalk, etc. in the dry bag. It keeps water out so it will keep chalk in just as well. I travel a lot with work and I always pack a flashlight and a pocket knife in my checked luggage, NOT CARRY ON, I just let the TSA guys know that they're in there and it's never been a problem.

I have been many countries with my chalk and I have never had a problem with it. The only trouble I have had with white powder is when I was going through customs at the airport in Regina, Saskatchewan with a bottle of creatine. As soon as I told them what it was and that I was there to do some work for the LDS church the let me go no questions asked.

Me and a partner had a couple of TSA employees boondoggled in the Vegas airport one time. We were flying home with a haulbag full of wall gear, and we got pulled over for a random search. Fortunately we were about half drunk and had all kinds of helpful suggestions as to what the numerous spiky iron things and hammers were all about. More fortunately, the gal searching us had a sense of humor (and appearently no sense of smell - there were some foul clothes down in there).
Gadzooks, I've been up for about 30 hours trying to get a computer model running; I think I'm getting a litle weird here.

No idiot would walk around with a bag of loose anthrax, unless they wanted to die before they got to where they were going.

Therefore, the TSA probably assumes that if you are still alive by the time you get to thier little scanner, it aint anthrax...

Also keep in mind that real anthrax is more of a cinnamon color than pure white.

And real chalk is more of a earth tone dirt color than a flaky white powdery substance.Wink

When I flew into Mexico they confiscated my chalk on the basis that it may be cocaine. Interestingly enough they still let me go without question but they wouldent let me keep my chalk.
