What do you look for in the biners (bolt end) before retiring them...assuming you have taken some falls on it?

Well, I don't know about nicks, but some of my biners are used to the point that they have grooves from where the rope runs through them. I take this as a sign that they are of the proper age and need to be retired. (This may or may not happen until the grooves get deeper.)

However, I would be interested to hear any stories anyone has about old biners failing with the gates closed, or data about how and when biners break.

If the nicks are sharp enough to cause you worry, you can smooth them down with sandpaper. Aluminum is softer than you think.
