I have never ice climbed, but if I did I would LOVE to do it in Ouray. I got to visit out there this summer and it is absolutely gorgeous even in the summer, I can only imagine what it is like in winter.

I will be there with a couple of friends from GJ. Last year was a blast and the ice this year looks great.

I checked the ice reports today and they still look good. Can anyone give any info on the road conditions so far? A.W.

I would not worry too much about the road conditions unless a storm rolls in. the roads are generally clear till then. In the town of Ouray there may be snow packed roads but, we usually park the car when we get there and dont use it till we leave for home. John

My arse is certainly going to be there...it's going to be 55 degrees here in Durango tomorrow, with nothing in the forecast. None of the roads are THAT bad anyway. I was at the ice park on opening weekend, it was sweet, I'm definitly looking forward to this weekend.

Any specific place where the RC people might meet up for the festival? I'm still trying to decide between JTree and Ouray for my next road trip. Any decision I make will be, as usual, last minute. And if anyone can recommend a good place to crash in Ouray, that'd be sweet. Marilyn

Brrrrrr, won't it be cold in your truck? I'm just as cheap as the next person, and will often sleep in my car at a rest stop on long trips. But car camping in the winter gets a bit chilly. Especially in a place known for its ice festival. Maybe that supermodel can warm you up. Or better yet, the hot spring in town! Marilyn

Although I have, like a "real" job so if it gets to cold I'll just get a room... but I'm still hoping for that super model.... Maybe she'll be a goober climber.... josh

Josh, Check out: http://www.wiesbadenhotsprings.com/ for more information on the hot springs. I passed through Ouray on the way home from Denver last month, and noticed the hot springs on the main highway through town. It seemed like the place to be on such a cold, wintery night. However, I don't think it will afford enough of an intimate and private atmosphere for your newfound supermodel/climber/bar chick. Stick some hand and foot warmers in the sleeping bag, and you have it made. I may swing into Ouray this weekend if I don't decide on Jtree. What does your truck look like? Marilyn

Damn, Super Models in the Ice Festival. I need to get back into climbing like i used to do. We only had cool chics that could out climb most of the gapers that spewed beta and never really did much climbing. Maybe they were just out to watch the girls.

Wish I could be there. I learned how to ice climb in Ouray last winter. That is the greatest little town! If you want to knock out some fun climbs outside the ice park itself, head up Camp Bird Road and take it til the small parking area at the end where the snow takes over the road. Head up the trail and there's several awesome backcountry waterfalls that are really fun climbs. The avalanche danger is on the other side of the mountain from where these frozen falls are so they're pretty safe. The hot springs there rule! And if you like being nekkid, head up the road to Ridgeway about 10 miles to the north, there's a place called Orvis Hot Springs that has some good tubs but it's "clothing optional" and just about everyone there soaks in the buff. Whoever is going to Ouray, stop in to The Portal and drink a Fat Tire for me!!! Many a great drinkfest I've had at that place. Look for the dollar above the bar with Beth23 on it, I put it there last fourth of July. Ahhh Ouray....I am green with envy for those of you going. If anyone is heading there who hasn't been there before, PM me, I've spent a lot of time there and can point you to some cool stuff around there.

My question is whether or not the people who soak in the buff are the kind of supermodel-ish people that one would want to see naked? And I will definitely be in Ouray this weekend. Fully clothed. Unless I get drunk. In which case, the ice festival will have on its hands the naked-singing-dancing ice queen. And how good is the festival for actually learning about ice climbing? I don't know a thing about it, and would like to have at it before I die. Marilyn (who doesn't drink for a very good reason)

As a reminder on friday night; that is when free beer and pizza can be had at the communuty center for a nominal donation to the ice park. I would suggest hooking up earlier or latter that evening so you dont miss out on the free beer. I will be in town thursday night if any one wants to hook up for some beers and an early climb on friday morning. John

xihn, Ouray is a great place to learn how to ice climb. It is all pretty much top ropeable. You can demo all of the gear needed (tools, crampons & boots) for free from the gear rep tents, provided you have your own harness, helmet (required), belay device and stuff to set up anchors. There are clinics available for first time climbers, check the web site. Also if you hook up with some RC.Com people they will be more than happy to take you on some climbs. Be carefull you may get hooked and it can be very expensive. John [ This Message was edited by: alpinerocket on 2003-01-15 08:31 ]

Uh oh. TWO bald guys with mustaches? I might get confused. Perhaps one of you could wear a pink bunny suit?
