What you see, approaching Pilot Mtn. on US 52, is Pilot Knob that was the regional landmark and is the National Heritage feature. There had been a staircase to the top, many years ago, and a cable car to get to it before the park road was developed. The rock that you see walking around it on Jomeokee Trail is stunningly beautiful, especially to a serious climber. And it has been climbed, but not legally in a long time. The current Class 3 Misdemeanor fine is $35 plus $131 court, and twelve people have been cited in the first two months this year. Only one group of boulderers from out of state had climbing gear; so State Park rules and signs are generally being respected by climbers. The official rationale for closing it to all access can be read at: http://carolinaclimbers.org/...in-big-pinnacle.html Other closures follow that reasoning, most importantly Big Gully, which has been a climber short-cut for as long as there has been climbing. It has been fenced at top and bottom. Not even the yearly rescue training will be allowed in, and people continuing to use it may be subject to citation. Climbers should use Three Bears Gully or Jomeokee Trail to reach Lower Ledge Springs Trail to the climbing areas--and leave in time to do that to leave in time, too. LL

Court costs for misdemeanors in NC reportedly went up to $162 in July 2011, making the total $197. Citations for climbing just the old staircase route continue to be actively pursued. If citations for entering Big Gully are made, the cost will be the same, along with unleashed dogs, etc. .
