What are the best shoes you've owned?
I bought 5.10 Spires but based on the iffy reviews I've read...I think I'm going to return them[I haven't used them yet].
Climb on!

The best shoes to get, that's so dependant on who's wearing them and what they're doing with them, so lets not get into that.

Best shoes I've personally owned: 5.10 Diamonds, I'll be buying the Saphires as my next pair.

depends on what u climb. for bouldering, i think (and i think many will agree) 5.10 dragon or anasazi velcro or v10 are all excellent. but God help u if u try to climb a crack in dragons

i hear the 5.10 mesas were good, not for bouldering htough (mad edging power, fiberglass midsole) also LaSportiva miura (sp?) are good, and i have heard laSportiva Katana is good too (i have tried Miura and liked it - good lace system, fast and easy to get on/off, good shape, i would get c4 rubber though).

anyway jsut my 2cents

Can't go wrong with the Anasazi Velcros. The Dragons are good for overhanging routes. Still undecided about the Mesas. So far they are great for edging and toeing.

People! people!

Lets assume Kerri is a begginer (because that is what her profile says)...

I'll also assume that the Spires fit you pretty well, because well, you bought them...

The Spires are a perfectly good shoe! Especially for begginers. They are comfy, have a relatively stiff sole for your still as of yet weak foot, and they are as tough as nails.

Yes, 5.10 has a few problems with certain models and delamination of the rubber but to my knowledge, the Spire is not one of them.

My partner has a pair (1 of 3, soon to be 4 pairs he owns) and swears by them. He's had them resoled at least once ('cus he literally wore the soles out) and they are still going strong. I have never owned a pair but he says that for all day cragging and general use, they can't be beat. And I know of at least another dozen people who say the same thing.

Keep your Spires and learn to climb in them. When you first start climbing, you don't really know how or have the skill to properly place your feet, thus your first pair of shoes will lose rubber fast. The Spires are designed for this purpose. You'll better understand what I'm saying here in 4 to 6 months when you start to notice how you're placing your feet.

When you start to get better and progress in your climbing skills, then start to look for a second pair of shoes. Maybe a pair that are better suited to the type of climbing you want to do (which you really don't know yet).

KEEP 'EM and happy climbing...

Oh, and Welcome to the "Vertical World"!!!

I love my La Sportiva Katanas, they rule. They are excellent for bouldering and spoprt climbing. You can adjust the velcro to different posistions for Maximum sensivitity.

Don't return the Spires...if they fit well, keep'em, they're a great first pair of shoes. They were one of the "beginner" shoes recommended to me at the shop I went to..they fit the best on my foot, so I went with'em and I'm glad I did...I don't think there is a "best" shoe at all..like everyone has said, it depends on the type of climbing you do and most importantly, what fits. I also agree with duskerhu that they are a great beginner shoe to develop your skills in..I've had mine for over 1 1/2 years and they're still good...they have stretched alot though...but for sometime now, I feel I've developed a "style" and have leaned towards a certain type of climbing which is helping me decide on my next pair of shoes, but I'll still keep my Spires cuz they're super comfy now that they're "broken in" quite well..

I'd never steer someone away from Spires, especially a beginner.

Oh no, another shoe thread!! Somewhere, ELVISLEGS is steaming!!!

I'm pretty new to rock climbing and my first pair were 5.10 Sapphires (oops!). Truthfully, I think they're a great shoe. They are very comfortable and fit well. BUT, after a few months of pretty regular climbing, they've gotten sloppy. They've stretched an unbelievable amount in length as well as in width, compromising performance. But if you're just getting started, comfort and fit should be your main concerns and I think the Sapphires are a very good choice.

I am now alternating between those and my new Mad Rock Hooker Zips.

La Sportiva Miura!
Great all-around shoe, from bouldering to long technical routes.
Perfect lace system, very good vibram rubber,
loose a little after some months use.

For high end crack climbing Mythos and Moccasyms have 98% of the market it would seem.

For high end face climbing and bouldering, the Boreal Zen, the 5.10 Anasazi lace-up and velcro, the Sportiva Miura seem to me to be the most widely used shoes.

That having been said the best shoe for a beginner is a comfortable shoe that's not too tight, the spires, sapphires, sportiva focus or mythos, boreal laser or ace are all perfectly fine choices as is just about anything else that's comfortable enough for you to enjoy climbing in.

My first pair of shoes were Spires, loved 'em. If they fit well keep them, they'll make a nice backup shoe someday.

Good grief- I just joined rockclimbing.com and the first thing I though was 'Oh no not another shoe thread'

Gear reviews shouldn't be taken all that seriously for something like shoes. If you are a beginner, just make sure that what you get fits snugly but _comfortably_ and you should be okay. Find a patient and well informed sales assistant at a dedicated climbing shop and rely on them rather than magazine reviews.

The best shoes I've owned are LaSportiva Cliffs. They are nice and wide and are realyy great for any type of climbing. You should buy some.
