Sharing harness

Taking some friends out to climb today, I noticed that a couple of them were very possesive of their harness. They perhaps weren't "rude" but they were definitely irked when someone else asked to borrow their harness, even if they weren't presently wearing it.

I have 3 harnesses and have been teaching people to climb for years, so I'm not real particular about other people using my stuff, but I am reluctant about sharing my main climbing harness (petzl corax) with others. Anyone else get this feeling?

Yup... I have an ugly/cheapo harness that I use as a loaner, but my main one is mine.

Kinda like climbing shoes, there's just some things you don't want other people touching.

I don't mind people using most of my stuff. It's just my shoes I prefer to keep to myself, but then no one ever wants to borrow your shoes anyway.

I hate it when people want to use my chalk.

People seem to think chalk is a free for all no need for asking thing.

I doughnut want other peoples sweaty claws in mah chalk. Not even to menton oozy flappers.

Also shoes.

I don't really like sharing my harness, but mainly because once it is on I keep it on for the day (taking crap breaks aside).

I have shared my harness, though, and my shoes, and other people's harnesses, and other people's shoes, and chalk, and gear, and water, and snacks, etc.

Assuming they weren't using it when I was planning on using it, why would I care?

The only thing that I won't share is my helmet. I have it adjusted to fit my teeny tiny head. I've only found one helmet that fits my head, and if it gets unadjusted it takes me forever to get it right again.

My main harness and shoes are for my use only but any older harness and shoes are fair game to anyone. If it has been replaced then there isn't an issue if it gets more wear. I don't want someone killing my pristine edges by crappy footwork.

Why can't anyone borrow your harness?

I guess it depends on the situation. If I'm out to climb and I only brought one harness, chances are I'm using it. If I took it off for lunch or a bathroom break, I'm going to put it on again soon and climb. If I loan you my harness at that point I'm sacrificing my own climbing time for you to climb because you didn't bring a harness. So it's not a personal problem with the harness, it's just you cutting in line to climb while I can't.

If I'm taking a new person out and I know in advance, I have no problem loaning my harness, generally my old/spare one but in some cases my main one if it fits better or something.

Alternatively if someone wants to borrow my gear for a weekend or something, I kind of expect them to at least have shoes and a harness as those are the first things one gets if they are serious about climbing. If you don't have those you either better be going out with a much more experienced friend, or you might not know enough to take care of my gear yet or you might get yourself hurt using it.

Letting people borrow my harness while I am there is not a big deal to me. However, my shoes are off limits.

Also, as far letting someone borrow my gear for the weekend; other than a piece of webbing which is currently out on loan and I have not yet gotten back, I would never let someone take my gear for the weekend.

I taught a person to climb and let her use my older harness until she got one for herself. Not a problem. I have seen friends on the carriage road(Gunks) who didn't have their gear, and let them use my harness to run a TR we had up(they climbed in approach shoes). No problem. I am not that possessive on the matter, I guess, but it doesn't happen often.

Shoes? I would only let a good friend or family member use them and only for TR and take em off when not actively climbing. If a partner needed to borrow for the day, I guess I would suggest they wear socks, just because...it's foot sweat! ewwww

Lend out my rack? Only to someone I know well enough that they can't just evaporate into the sunset.

Guide books? While in JTree, I have lent my West book out to near strangers camping nearby. For days. So far it has always come back. But I sort of feel that one is playing the dice; eventually it will disappear if I continue to do that.

Now that's some funny shit.

As to the OP's question, I suggest you wear a diaper under the harness. No one will ever ask to borrow it again, I promise.

Exactly. Even if I am planning on using it, if it's someone I like and we're just cragging I will gladly take turns or something.

I don't really mind anyone using my harness but I usually put it on and leave it on. I do sometimes carry an extra one to loan out.

None of my friends climb so when I get out it's either by dragging a friend who I don't expect to have gear or with somebody I met at the crag in which case they have their own gear. Sharing some pro at the crag doesn't bother me at all, but I'd have to know somebody pretty well to let them take off with anything.

My harness is sized to fit me and my spares are one size fits anything but me. That and the person who would need to borrow a harness is most likely the kind of person who could find a new and interesting way to fuck it up. Same rule as a gun, there are many like it but this one it mine.
