I've always liked the simplicity of climbing shoes--rubber soles, leather/synthetic uppers, and a retention system (laces, Velcro, elastic). I wonder if there are any street shoes with a similar design. In terms of simplicity, Toms are pretty close, as are some mocassin-type shoes, but they seem to lack the durability of climbing and other athletic shoes. I imagine that one could make a shoe like this in a way similar to how bicycle tires are made--create a casing by weaving cotton or silk, and covering that with rubber (that's an oversimplification of the process, of course). Does anyone make shoes like this? I've looked, but couldn't find any. What do you think of a shoe like this, in general?

I would go with one of those outdoors brands or maybe online.

Acopa used to make the scrambler, which is basically a comfy climbing shoe for the street.

i find my regular old teva sandles to do the trick for me. street shoe, backpacking sandle, approach shoe. hell ive even soloed 9's in them. doesnt get any more simple than a sandle. unless you just want to tie string to some old tire tread. thats simplest

Merrell makes the Trail Glove and the True Glove, New Balance makes the Minimus, Nike makes some (Zero or something like that?). I've got a pair of the Merrell shoes, and they're really nice.

Thanks for all the input. I do like the Merrell Trail/True Gloves and the Acopa Scramblers (as well as the Five Ten Guide Tennie), and I may end up buying a pair I need new shoes. However, none of those shoes were what I was hoping to find. Maybe what I'd like just isn't realistic--a shoe without arch support; that is meant to be worn sockless; that can be washed and resoled easily; that you can run and bike in; that doesn't look goofy. In my mind, that shoe has a flat insole and outsole, an upper made of leather or canvas or cotton, and no interior 'padding' (which makes shoe extremely uncomfortable to wear without socks).

Puma makes a couple things that are vaguely like what you are describing, though I wouldn't want to run in them much: http://www.shop.puma.com/...S,pd.html?cgid=23120 I used to have a pair that were even more simple/similar to climbing shoes, but they don't seem to make them anymore.
