I'm 23 years old and live in the Cookeville, Tn area. I have little experience climbing and rapelling but I am wanting to learn badly. I am athletic and confident that I could do well at this sport, but I am not sure how to go about starting since I dont know a lot about it, or anyone who really does. I was wondering what the best way to learn would be, and if there are any courses that I could take to learn. Thanks for your help. Michael

Find someone to climb with and have them teach you. Having a mentor is the best idea.

I've got a friend that is also wanting to learn. Is there anyone in the middle tennessee area that would be willing to teach a couple of rookies the ropes?

If you don't have luck here, try going to the local rock gym. Its usually not very hard to meet some experienced climbers to head out with.

My suggestion would be that you find someone who has been climbing for a long time and see if they will take you with them..yes you can learn from the gym, but hands on learning is the best Hope that helps

Go over to http://www.seclimbers.org and visit the message board there. That would be the best way to hook up with someone in the southeast. You may want to come to some of the trail days / events and meet people, get some experience then. For example, Mortal Combat 2 at HP40 is coming up soon (2/8) and there will be the Hoe Down trail day at Sandrock on March 22. We almost always get some climbing in at the trail days and there are usually people of all different skill levels climbing.
