I have always wondered how you hoist one on a petard? Better go look up that word too.

Sounds like a good route name. Too bad everything at the Williamson's Stream Wall is already named.

Brown Ring? I haven't heard of that one. Sherman? Who's that?

Wait. I think I just called a bad name by Curt.

"Brown ring" being a derogatory term for a less than stellar style of ascent--coined by John Sherman. But, it was a joke, OK?

Curt

I love that term! But I think I'll start calling my less than stellar ascents brownpoints instead. Sherm the Verm is a funny dude.

Curt

OK, I did:

"For 'tis the sport to have the enginer / Hoist with his owne
petar" -- Shakespeare, Hamlet III iv. "Hoist" was in Shakespeare's
time the past participles of a verb "to hoise", which meant what "to
hoist" does now: to lift. A petard (see under "peter out" for the
etymology) was an explosive charge detonated by a slowly burning
fuse. If the petard went off prematurely, then the sapper (military
engineer; Shakespeare's "enginer") who planted it would be hurled
into the air by the explosion. (Compare "up" in "to blow up".) A
modern rendition might be: "It's fun to see the engineer blown up
with his own bomb."

I knew the expression, but not the source. Its even more apt than I had thought.

Yes, that's what I said 8-9 feet. You don't seem to understand that the landing had this wierd moss that covers a bunch of roots and you could twist your ankle really bad. Maybe even worse!

We all know that "high" is relative to the climb and landing involved. I choose to be safe rather than broken. My new project is almost 18 feet high, but the landing is better. I am going to try it without the rope soon.

Bye for now.

heh heh, got me, if that was a mini troll

back to the boldness of the boulder problem: would you say that if it was a boulder problem that had a dangerous landing that it would be a bolder problem than say the same boulder problem with a less dangerous landing, or do only the vagaries of the boulder problem itself determine if it's a bolder problem? How bold can a boulder problem be before it's ceases to be a boulder problem, and becomes a solo?

Hmmmm,
An excellent question.
If I am working my V3 problem on TR and I get tired and am hanging on the rope and suddenly realize I have to go to the bathroom, how would I best accomplish that? I don't think I would want to go right there. My belayer probably wouldn't be to thrilled. Do you suppose I should lower even though that would mean I would have to climb back up to the same point to finish the route? That would be lame.

I think what you do in that case is this:

1: Loosen harness buckles
2: Squirm out of harness
3: hang and drop
4: do your business
5: climb back up to harness
6: Squirm back in
7: Tighten buckles
8: Climb on!

That way, even though you weren't there the whole time, you were never lowered, so it counts!
