PORTLAND -- Just days after a Portland teen fell to his death, a climber had to be rescued from a cliff at Rocky Butte.
Two men were trying to rappel down the east side cliff Wednesday evening about 8 p.m., said Portland Fire & Rescue Bureau spokesman Paul Corah.
One of the climbers was too tired to make it back up to the top, he said. The partner atop the cliff then lowered him down to a ledge about 50 feet from the top.
Neither carried a cellphone nor wearing headlamps and the climber already on top had to drive for help.
"This rescue took place in the exact location where a 16-year-old boy died two nights ago," Corah said.
Rescue crews arrived about 9:30 p.m. and decided that darkness precluded any try to have the stuck climber try to continue down or pull himself up.
Crews then started a high-angle rope rescue, Corah said. It took 17 firefighters two hours to bring Daniel Martinek, 40, safely up the east face.
Firefighters also learned that the young children of the climbers were playing near the cliff side.
"This is not a place for children as there is no fence, no roped off area, and no signage to indicate how dangerous this area has been, especially in recent months," Corah said. "People could literally walk down the unmarked path and over the edge of the cliff if they are not careful."

I have to say, the bolded part made me wonder. How do you need 17(!!!!) firefighters for this rescue?

With that many people you wouldn't even need to rig anything, they could all just grab the rope and pull.

We in the fire servies have protocals and laws we have to follow.
Adds up and still lean.

It's a bit of a mystery to all of us here in town given the thing is like 50 feet tall to begin with and if he was lowered then he should have just taken the trail back up and out.
This is either being misreported, or more likely it's just a case of 'stupid is as stupid does'. And these nimrods couldn't be too bright if they left their kids at the top given it's one of the most dangerous top approaches I've ever encountered in 37 years of climbing.
