cragging when there's snow

Though we only have two-four feet where I'm at, recently skiied in and hit some snowbound crags.

For those of you that do this, any clever tips for keeping your climbing shoes dry when starting up climbs in these conditions? :/

We tried clearing the snow away and attempting to stay only on the rope tarp, but unless it's blocky at the base or has a juggy start (i.e. typically lower grade climbs) it's hard to not end up getting the soles wet.

I'm debating taking my alpine boots and crampons to start some of these then take on the first pro and toss on the climbing shoes. Never done any mixed climbing with them but maybe this is a good time to get a taste hehe. Always wondered just how small a foot a crampon can stick on :-D neway.

cheers for any suggestions, or other tips for cragging in snowy conditions.

What I've done in the past is stomp down the snow around the start of the route. Make it nice and packed and flat . Then, being careful of where I'm standing, I start the route as usual. One of my climbing partners used to grab the floor mat from his truck and stash it on his pack. We'd stand on that and start.

tarp, carpeting, blow torch, hand warmers, thermos of tea/coffee, thermals, a scarf, your favorite fitted tee for when the camera begin rolling.

Fuck blow torches. If you can't dry it with a towel and chalk then skip it and do another route. I've seen way too many broken holds and glazed over slopers.

When there's snow on the ground, its time to go do some AT, or ice. Rock can wait. Or, if it can't, go to JOsh, or cochise.
