In the indoor bouldering gym where I go there's a really nice thick padding in the middle of the place, but in the 18 inches closest to the wall itself there's much thinner padding. I'm always afraid that if I fall straight down, I might injure myself on that thinner padding. Is it common for bouldering gyms to have that thick padding far from the wall but just beneath it much thinner? Why do they do that? Thanks, Jim

Have you ever fallen or watched someone fall? Unless you are falling with your feet only a foot or two off the ground, It is actually very hard to land with your feet that close to the wall, even on a dead-vertical wall, and even when if you are really trying. I would not consider this padding pattern to be dangerous.

Yep, also, outdoors do you put your pad directly against the wall? unlikely. like lena says you're not going to fall there.

Sounds bomber to me. Watch some bouldering videos to see where the majority of landings are. You will see most are not that close to the wall.

I agree that most bouldering falls are going to be greater than 18 inches from the wall, though climbers can fall closer to the wall on rare occasions. I would make sure to be aware of the thinner padding on walls that slant less than vertically (away from you) if those exist at your gym, but I don't think it's anything to be overly concerned about.

Thanks, Jim I realize how old this thread is but I'm bored on a train right now so fuck it. Can I say that here? At any rate I know first hand that this is safe. I over shot the pad once. That hurt. And I bounced! That was kinda cool once I realized I wasn't paralyzed. I don't suggest it though. Lol.
