DESPERATELY SEEKING BETA

I am DESPERATELY seeking beta to anywhere that doesn't have swarms of biting insects that make me want to cut my own rope after the first pitch.

Preferably the place would have other humans and/or something I could live in, but more important is the absolute lack of anything that could make me itch.

Thanks in advance,

Rose.

P.S. socks on the hands NOT WORKING.

Antarctica and Mars come to mind. After that, desert locations.

When I used to live out in Nova Scotia we would stick to the ocean side areas through bug season. On account that most of the ocean side cliffs require a boat to get to them this would mean grabbing your beanie and your posse and going out bouldering.

Since moving to Ontario I spend most of my weekends in denial.

Northern norway. Good bouldering and sport. Great for bigger stuff. Almost no bugs up in the mountains.

Downsides are the price and weather.

Well, you see, when the smoke comes to town the gym has to shut off the evaporative coolers. Then I get sweaty and my ear bud tends to slip out when I try yet again to dyno through the 5.6 crux. Tongue

Ugh. How is that? I was out there last spring/summer when the fire in AZ was blowing smoke into town in the evening. Wasn't the nicest thing. I was supposed to go to Los Alamos when that fire happened but had to cancel my trip. I'm hoping it's not turning into a regular thing - I'm moving back to town in July.

Heh, was mostly just spinning a yarn for Jake. Sorry.

It hasn't been that bad. Thursday, the city of Albuquerque issued a public health warning due to air quality related to the Gila fire (SW NM). We turned off our evaporative cooler a couple of times for a handful of hours. Some smell of smoke. Otherwise, still got outside and even went climbing on Sunday.

Just saw tonight that a separate fire recently started in the Gila area. Doesn't bode well concerning fire closures in the near future closer to home.

Yeah, I was thinking about that part. I guess it's nothing terribly new, just potentially disappointing.

Exactly.

Maybe just have to dust off those plans for trips to the northern parts.

Wait, really? I didn't know that. That may actually determine some future life moves. Like none at all? Fantastic.

I mean, I am terrified of spiders and I know you get some well creepy ones down there, but fear isn't as bad as actual itchy suffering so it seems worth it.

Well, then Australia / NZ are out of the question for you!

BTW, the bugs aren't too bad over here in this area of the continent. Cool

Some areas of the SW, especially riparian stream bottoms, have mosquitos, deer flies, gnats, etc. But yeah, compared to other areas, the bugs are pretty minimal there.

After living in Connecticut and Kansas most of my life and climbing a lot in Arkansas, I am amazed at the lack of insects in Red Rock (las vegas). I leave my backdoor open for the dog when I'm home and no mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers or spiders (knock wood). When climbing there are very occasionally some gnats but no horse flies, black flies, or wasps. Maybe I have been very lucky, but I have yet to apply any insect repellent since I moved here. I wouldn't dare climb in Horseshoe Canyon Ranch in the summer without Deet. I have had two scorpions in the house though so that might be a deal breaker for you.
