Hey Folks

Just dropping by. Looking for some friendly advice.
I was a climber for many years ... I'm mostly out of the sport now.

I will be riding my motorcycle up to the Sierras in August.
I'm looking for a quiet camp spot (no tourists, no rangers) that is fairly
close to a sealed road with a turnout. Can be natl forest or park,
but away from the crowds. Could be anywhere between Kernville
and Lake Tahoe. Does not need to be near rock routes.
Just quiet.
thanks :-)

In exchange, if any of you are heading for Africa and have questions,
PM me. I will give you info on how to get around. Have picked
up other skills since i stopped flaking out climbing ropes :-)

cheers,
dT

You can find spots to park and camp just about everywhere along that segment of the Sierra (singular, not plural... it's one mountain range) for a single night, arriving in the evening and leaving in the morning. Most of those would probably be OK to hang out for multiple days too. Land ownership ranges from LA DWP, BLM, and National Forest. BLM tends to be the most accepting of dispersed camping, but many areas in the National Forest allow it too.

Are you looking for spots just to crash out for the night, or a good place to stay for a while?

was looking for a place to hang out for a while.
i have thought about Courtright Reservoir - might be one place where there's not to many people. I haven't been up there before. I also thought about somewhere near Hetchy Hetchy reservoir. Haven't been out there either ...not sure if the roads are paved over to there.

As you can tell - since it's gonna be hot I am thinking about spots near a lake or river. :-)

You should post up on SuperTopo. Lots of folks that live in climb in the Sierras post up there and could give you some good suggestions.

I met some guys who were camped out below the dam at cherry lake. I got my rental car stuck and they helped pull me out. The area is very beautiful, though there are people around especially the lake.
