What is "THE" guidebook for the needles? I had heard that the only good one was out of print? Any ideas?

The "Touch the Sky" is the most comprehensive but even it is outdated, new routes not updated. I see it for sale used for $150 at Chessler Books. If you were going to climb there a lot, not just a visit, I would recommend getting it. Amazing maps. The flashy new Needles guide is only good for a quick visit.
I would get the new Rushnmore guide. I found the old one confusing but its gotten better recently. And it is a very nice change of pace from the Needles, both in more closely spaced bolts and whole different scenery.
And if you can find a used "Poorperson's Guide to the Needles" by ...whats-his-name? ; its cheap and he's the old maistro there, so get it.
Amazing place the Needles.
