Does anyone have any info on dealing with land managers concerning a long term closure of an entire crag?
I would like to see some changes allowing us to climb on routes that do not affect the nesting birds.
Thanks for any help.

Who manages the land - Forest Service, BLM, County, State? It will matter what the agencies "mission statement" is.

National Forest land. It has been in place over ten years with no movement.

It's likely a blanket closure. This is usually due to a lack of available monitoring resources. Where are you talking about?
With regard to the scope of the closure, what size crag are we talking about? Also, sometimes BLM and FS will close broad areas - again for the same reason, a lack of monitoring resources. This is more typical in the west than the east.

I am a peregrine monitor and climber in Southern Oregon. I agree with Healyje that the land managers are lacking in monitoring resources, people like me. Since the birds generally move their eyrie from year to year it is easiest to just shut down a crag until the birds have fledged if you are not sure where they are at.
Perhaps you could get an interested local climber to volunteer monitoring the crag/birds you are interested in. It would also be good to contact the Access Fund as they deal with these issues every year.
In a worst case scenario you are dealing with a land manager who not only doesn't understand climbers but doesn't like climbers. If this is the case your situation will be much more challenging.

I contacted AF and the organization listed as monitoring the birds (they haven't done so for quite some time). I am pretty sure nothing has changed since the last time I brought up the subject.
A particular ranger shut it all down. I communicated with the ranger once and I was told it wasn't my business.
I'm hopeful we can work together. Just looking for ideas to pursue that will have a happy outcome for all parties.

You're absolutely right. It has not been that way and I fear a backlash because I've begun asking questsions. Last time I did, a few years ago, the same ranger asked an acquaintance of mine if I was some sort of nut job.

Once we get all the players together, then it will hopefully become an open dialog.
