Bad year for them in the canyon.
There is a nest of yellow jackets at the Guide Wall, just left of the arete where the trail drops down to wrap the base below the big ledge. There are also scattered nests along the top of the Entrance Walls.
Chiggers are legendary this year... spray your pants cuffs and boot tops and socks thoroughly, and expect to get bitten anyway.
No-see-ums are tiny mites who bear the flames of Hell itself in their jaws, who swarm busily through your eyebrows and up your nose, into your ears and the corners of your tight-squinted eyes on belay, nipping and tickling and generally attempting to drive you insane.
No-see-ums think of DEET the way inner city junkies think of crack...
Then there are the gnats and black flies...
A hoodie helps, as do clear belay/safety glasses... but be prepared to endure.
don't worry... it's worth it.

They don't have bees or mosquitoes west of Denver?
I guess the wildfires, mudslides, poison oak and two-legged pests more than make up for it

Bees and Mosquitos, sure we have them, but I can't remember the last time there were enough of them anywhere to bother me even slightly.
wildfires, it get's a little smokey some summers (not at all this past summer though)
Mudslides, unfortunately, I've never had the pleasure of encountering one.
Poison Oak, as long as you know what it looks like your good to go, it's not like it's coming after you.
Two-legged pests, the nice thing about them is that since they only have two legs, they don't like to walk much, so once you're about 5-10 minutes away from the road you don't see too many of them either.
I'd definately stay wherever you are though, it sounds like a lot of fun.
