I am new to rappelling but have taken a class on it. They sold me a dynamic rope because I plan to climb also. My question is can you use a dynamic rope to rappel over a cliff edge. For example the masterpoint is 3 or 4 feet back from the cliff edge and the dynamic rappel rope ties to the masterpoint and goes over the cliff edge. If I protect it with rubber or something will that work, or do I need to be concerned with the elongation of the rope at that edge?

Yes, you do need to protect it, especially if the rock is particularly rough, or sharp, or if you will be rapping repeatedly on it. There are purpose made rope protectors that are okay, but I think most people use an old rucksack, some carpet, or something similarly padded, unabbrasive, and robust. Edit: congratz on your first rope! Hope you have many a sickgnar adventures with ))
