I've heard good things. I've once tried a pair of bent-shafts out...they felt pretty heavy, but of course that give the swing more force. I've been told that they are great for alpine ice (I'm a waterfall person), and seem decent on waterfall ice. However, I opted to go with the BD Rage when buying my tools.

Black prophets are way heavy compared to shrikes or rages, why would you want to swing so hard ,hooking is the way.

Aren't these the ones with the thick grips? Makes them hard to use unless you have big hands too...

I agree, the grips on the Prophets have a pretty large radius. No problem if you have big hands. But if you have small hands, the Shrikes or Rages are much better. The Trango Captain Hook is also great if you have smaller hands.

I've measured the grip diameter of some of the tools.

BP, CFBP and Cobra grip diameter: all three tools come in right around 9.9 to 10.08 cm (depending on location of measurement).

Since the grip is asymmetrically contoured, I think much easier to hold onto than a similarly sized symmetric oval.

Here's some comparison measurements of their other tools:

Chouinard X-15 (smooth shaft circa 1990): 91-92mm.
BD BRS X-15 (bonded rubber shaft circa 1994): 99-100mm.
BD X-15 (red shaft, little jets molded into the grip circa
1997): 98-99mm.
BD Shrike (current): 91-92mm.

Black Prophets are great tool, IMO.

FYI,

I agree that grip shape is as important as diameter. The Cobra has a pretty large grip, but is supposed to be very ergonomically designed and comfortable.

I have small hands, and the Rage and Trango Captain Hook are definitely easier for me to grip than the Black Prophet. Your best bet it to try out different tools and see which feels best. Hang on something if you can.

I have smaller hands also, have a pair of SHRIKES, and find them quite nice. Even though they have the curved handle, they plunge well for the alpine routes, too. Nice and light compared to some other tools I have used!
