OK. I know I'll probably catch alot of flack over this one, but do any of you girls suffer from what I would like to refer to a Climber Boy Syndrome? That is, you can meet someone and they are a total deadbeat, or they are just not your type, but then you find out they climb, and they suddenly become more attractive. Or, maybe you meet a guy at the crag while you're out climbing one day and in a rational state, you wouldn't be attracted to him, but because he's climbing, you are? Am I alone in this? Should I seek professional help? I'm just trying to find out if I'm crazy...

Guilty. And known to tell a man "no way" because I know he doesn't climb. But that's because I can't stand the b**ching and moaning I got from the last couple of non-climbing men I did date. BTW, how on earth did you manage to find a school with an "adventure sports" major? I've never even heard of that. (The wheels start turning: if I go back to school, I don't have to pay my student loans...)

I don't think it's restricted to climbing. you meet someone who's really into a common hobby and you feel a connection.

I haven't had this happen in terms of boyfriend material, but I have had to deal with acquaintances that I'm forced to hang out with but that I'm not too fond of. Just because we're both climbers, doesn't mean we relate on any other issues in life, but whereas if I was around these people in another setting, I would run away, because we're linked by climbing, I feel reluctant to let them go as acquaintances.

Isn't that the point though??? There is more to life than climbing...(did I say that????) How many gorgeous guys have ya gone out with...I mean...weak in the knees stuff...and then after they have opened their mouths for 2 dates you can't stand them...it's natural to be attracted to someone with an interest in something that is a very important part of your life....and you'll look past a lot of the superficial chit that often attracts you to someone without knowing what's inside. Maybe it's a good thing?

I guess a climbing deadbeat _is_ my type. Just kidding really.... My bf is a master of simple living, and I envy how easily he gets by without a lot of material things. Working part time allows to be such a free spirit (without being an irresponsible deadbeat). He also is able to help me (stuck working FT+) with a lot of domestic stuff. Women have been doing it for men for years since, like, forever.

I couldn't imagine belittling my guy by calling him a house boy because is so not that. His lifestyle does come with the perks that you mentioned though. Oh-so-cute, climbs harder than I'll ever even be able to follow, and works PT in an astrophysics lab. Ladies, I am so in L-O-V-E!

(The wheels start turning: if I go back to school, I don't have to pay my student loans...) There is a school in Prescott, AZ. I have seen some of the classes out at Granite Mountain learning about knots and trad climbing and top rope setup. Stuff like that. I talked to them and they also learn about other adventure sports, but I can't remember right now. Most of them go on to become professional guides.

an a-hole is an a-hole. I've met nicer bums/subsitance living guys that climb than ones with money.
