Dude, there is not other way except to rap down with wire brushes and a broom, and maybe something to pry off loose flakes and edges. It'll take about 4 hours to scrub a 25m line, depending on how dirty it is and how good of a job you do. If you've ever climbed at Skaha, B.C., you'll know what I'm talking about when it comes to serious scrub time. Rig your gear so you won't lose it if you drop it. And prussiks or jumars make life more pleasent. It's dirty, it sucks, it'll make you weigh wether the line is worth disturbing a mini-ecosystem over.

if you cant clean it without nylon bristles and your own two hands (and feet), it doesnt need to be cleaned. minimal cleaning is key. dont disturb unecessarily any lichen or vegetation. dont pry loose shit off with a crowbar. use body weight and strength. if you need to rap in, fine, but dont use fucking tools...

I've got to clarify my position. If it's a boulder problem, nothing more than a toothbrush should be used. If it's a climbing route, then I revert back to my original statement.

One thing that can greatly speed up the timeit takes to clean aroute is to only clean the holds. Climibng the route will clean up the rest over time and it also lets you get on you prized FA sooner.

Be advised that what you call just "moss and scum" is probably a small and fragile ecosytem in of itself. No joke. There are a number of environmentalists who frown on climbing because of the damage it does to such cliff ecosystems. That said, I'm certainly not telling you not to clean it. I'm just advising that you think about it. Some questions to ask yourself. Who owns the rock? Do you think the quality of the climbing will justify the damage?
