Miss B has had a cat scan and this has revealed no damage to her spinal column or any of her backbones. The reported damage to her Atlas bone that supports her skull is revealed to not now be damaged. This is indeed great news. She is still in a drug induced coma until brain pressure reduces and then she will be slowly brought out of the coma she is in. I have been passing on all your well wishing to the family. The accident happened at Frog Buttress at Mt. French, South East Queensland, Australia. I am soooo glad that you guys are taking this helmet message to heart. This is exactly what the families wishes are. All of her skull fractures as revealed by the xrays and cat scan are where her helmet would have been. Do it, wear your helmet, refuse to belay a partner who does not have a helmet on. ...Phil...

First off, thank God she's alive. When I started reading the initial post and the summary of injuries I was sure the fall was fatal. Congradualtions and thanks from all climbers to all the EMS workers who were able to get there and help save her life. Best wishes for her recovery. What is the prognosis? Bit it's another sad example of how important it is to wear a helmet on lead. I've started leads this year and I'd never go up a route without one. Even if I get on a route I'm totally confident I can lead I still wear one. Better safe than sorry.

helmet on leads? I've done limited outdoor climbing, and one thing I've learned from many recent stories, is to wear a helmet eveing if TR'ing. So many what-ifs, and a "what-if" regarding your helmet shouldn't be one of them. I hope she gets past the crux she's going through now and makes a 100% recovery.

This story brought back a lot of horrible memories, Three years before I even started climbing I witnessed a friend of mine fall off a rock down the coast here in Oz. We were all young and stupid. I had no idea of what rockclimbing was, we were efectively soloing a rather horrendous piece of chossy sandy loose rock and I watched as my mate, at age 13, fell backwards off the rock, losing his footing, and land head first on rocks below. Needless to say he was announced dead on arrival at hospital. Never will I forget the sound, the adrenalin, or the absolute terror of that moment. I only hope and pray that this story has a far happier ending than mine. I feel so helpless in these situations, Miss B sounds like a strong woman. I want to send my thoughts and prayers out to her and her family. I know how desperate these times can be. Words just don't seem to say enough... but these events really hit home and remind us of how mortal we are. The irony of my story was that the greatest healing from my ordeal was actually taking up climbing. Now I climb for freedom, and for safety. Emily.

Hope all is well with Miss. B. I always always always wear my helmit when I am leading climbs. My wife is a RN dealing with head injuries and my son has had a bad head injury and they are not good. Head injuries are one of the hardest things to deal with. I love climbing, so I dont want to miss it because I took a lead fall and hurt my head. Thanks for sharing this accident story with us to help us climb safer. Frank

http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=11828 This is a pic of the green Alien that was the second piece that pulled. I am looking for peoples opinions on why this piece pulled. The piece did not appear to have had a quickdraw on it. The piece above this one was a black Alien and it pulled after the climber called for a take and she had rested on it for perhaps 2 seconds. Opinions on this piece already expressed are that it could have walked in to a wider part of the crack and then 2 lobes inverted thus allowing the cam to be pulled out of the crack after being shock loaded. ...Phil...

Philbox, as you mentioned in your first post, you would prefer people not give their opinions of how this incident/accident happened for the time being. If it is now time for people to start the judging process, it MIGHT be a good idea to move the "opinion" portion to a new topic so the people who care (most of us, I am sure) can just send their thoughts and prayers here. That would help keep the feelings and opinions separated. Just a thought. Ben

Last night I went to visit B at the intensive care unit up at the hospital. She is improving but still remains in a drug induced coma. There is some hope that things are on the up and up but it really is too early to tell. She has much to go yet before anyone can tell whether she will be 100 percent. They just can`t say with brain injuries like B sustained. ...Phil... still praying.
