Just wanted to inform those boulderers traveling to Hueco this sping of some problems I had with the ranch this past weekend. Beware of depending on tours there. We paid $100 to change our flight and stay an extra day cause we were assured on the phone that we could get on a tour no problem if we signed up the day before. Well, we signed up and showed up at 10 to 10 AM the day of the tour. No guide was willing to get off their lazy ass and take us on a tour. We had 7 people who couldn't get in the park and not one guide from the rock ranch would agree to walk around on a tour with us. These guys were just hanging out doing nothing! It sucked. So, just wanted to give ya'll the heads up. Apparently they are bribeable, so if you run into the same problem, try offering a six pack or a few "nugs". We, unfortunatly, found this out too late.

Was that on Monday ?

Since pretty much all the guides had been on for the entire weekend, many of them took a needed day off on Monday.

You should have done what everyone else did: get up early and snag the last of the 20 North Mountain reservations.

You missed a hella rad session at the Mushroom Boulder.

:)

Did we meet ?

First, sorry you had a bad experience, I know it sucks to have things go wrong on a vaction. But, I've gotta stick up for the guides for a minute . . . You need to understand that the guides work for basically nothing! Yes, I am referring to Rob Rice's guides, not the park volunteers. To do a tour through the Rock Ranch you pay $20/person. Off the top, $10 goes to the Park, and at least $5 goes to the Ranch. That means at best, the guide gets $5/person, often less because on smaller tours Rob gets all of the $ that doesn't go to the park. The guides really only make what the tours are willing to tip them at the end, and, given that the majority of climbers are either cheap or broke, the tips usually aren't that much. The guide are also required to do a certain amoutn of tours per week for Rob. This is in exchange for being able to camp for free. So, once they put in their required efforts they are needing a rest and/or a day for their own climbing. The guides are not supposed to, and usually dont, climb while giving a tour.

Again, it sucks that things got messed up for you, and you probably shouldn't have been "assured" a tour, but understand that your beef should not lie with the guides! $$ always changes peoples' minds. When i was there in December I knew tours would be busy and I'd have to follow a group to their projects as well as mine, so instead, I simply hired Claire Murphy for two days, for just me and my girlfriend. Put up a buch of money to do it, but it was definitely worth it. And to say you couldn't get on N. Mountain is a bit of a stretch, considering the walk-up policy. I guess this was a problem though if you waited (based on assurances) until 10am.

There were 2 walk in spots available for North when our group of 3 showed up at 9:30.

You just gotta get up early, bird, and get the worm.

That's interesting, since when I called at 10:10AM Wanda told me there were 10 walk-ins available. By the time I left the ranch (after Rob Rice talked my ear off about what a cool guy he was and that I shouldn't be upset, dude) and got to the office, there were only 2 spots left and I had a group of 3. Anyways, we got in around 11:15. It just sucked that I paid lots of $$$ to change a flight and was reassured many times that I would be able to get on a tour on Monday. It doesn't take that much energy to walk to the Dragon's Den! It just seems selfish to me when 7 people are psyched to climb and you're just being lazy. If I would have known the guides took bribes I would have been way willing to bribe them. I just think people should be aware of what may be necessary to get out there.

it's unfortunate that things didn't work out for you, but generally speaking those guides are VERY willing to take people out.

as far as the "hueco is closed" comment goes... gimme a break. i go down every year and don't have problems. sure, it's not as easy as it used to be, but once you figure out the system (which ain't that complicated!) the place is still the best bouldering in america, hands down.

Selfish Selfish Selfish. "It doesn't take that much energy to walk to Dragon's Den". It's all about you isn't it? Read my above post, respect what these people do for the climbing community, or at least the Hueco community.

I honestly don't see what the problem is.

The session at the Mushroom Boulder was OFF THE HOOk.

And I bet you wouldn't be so upset if you had sent Mushroom Roof.

AND YOU GOT TO CLIMB WITH BEeeeeeeeeee RAD.

WTF ?!?!?

See, that's the thing, it's not all about me. If I was in the guide's situation, I would have guided the 7 people out no matter how tired I was, because I'm NOT selfish (for the most part.)

Yes, lox, it was a great sesh at the mushroom boulder. And such a pleasure to climb with BeeeRad. Although I think he greased up Mushroom Roof after running his hand through his hair ( ) No, just kidding, Brad is a great guy.

So, lox, which of the many boys there that day was you? I'm easy to spot since I'm a girl, but it's hard to keep all the guys straight.

Aimee... you were totally keeping me straight in that little tank top of yours. Yowza ! Mad props to your hubby for taking you off the market.

And I don't reveal myself that easily.

First, camhead has to reveal himself to me and you gotta guess.

Hint: I was the enigmatic eclectic. Duh.

I'm flattered. Glad to know I could at least look good cause I was climbing miserably! I was still worked from bouldering Friday and Sat.

Okay, you're from Austin and you know BeeeRad. I'm thinking you were sitting with 2 (?) other guys by the corner of the boulder while I was working Mushroom. Are you the skinny guy with the baseball cap and jeans? He didn't seem loud enough to be you, but I figure him as a Texan, so he could be you. Am I on the right track?

Camhead- did I meet you at Lucky Pierre before we went to mushroom?

I had a shaved head, and was with two other dudes. didnt climb much other than flailing miserably on El Murray Left. My fingertips are still hashed from that trip.

I'm thinking that Lox was the same one that was screaming "boldering.com4lyfe!!!11" drunkenly at the awards ceremony on saturday night.

Oh, you were one of the El Murray attempters. I tried it a couple of times, it's classic, but it's so vertical. I like more overhanging stuff. I wasn't there Sat. night. I had to have Charlie pick up my prizes and apparently he got teased. We always stay with my hubby's parents in Las Cruces when we go to Hueco. It's nice to have showers, beds and get to eat kick ass chile rellenos at Si Senors.

I think I left mushroom before the mayhem really kicked in. I remember seeing all you guys doing that dyno problem.

I didn't even get that far on anything on the Murrays, what was left of les? I was with two other dudes from dallas, we were chilling with little chris (guide) on the awards night, and I think you know him.

and I only did the v4 version of the morgue. it still hurt.
