I am going on my first trip to Linville Gorge soon and I am sorta confused as to which way is best to get to the Mummy Buttress. The new guidebook says to continue around the gorge rim to the summit of the Mummy Buttress and go down the third class gully. The Kelley guide says to go down the main trail to the Ampitheater, then take a left for the Mummy Buttress. It seems like the approach given by the new guide is better - am I correct? Thanks for listening to me ramble and for any help you can give.

I can't tell you definitely about the approach to the mummy buttress, but holy crap...the descent through the amphitheater is not easy (but it was awesome...if you like bushwacking) Other than that, i would seriously reccoment the Prow (on the north side... kickass climb) ~Chris

Jon, When are you planning on going? I'm going next weekend and I can give you an answer after that if it is not too late. In the mean time, you might want to take a look at: http://www.blackdogexpeditions.com/hotspots/tablerk.htm

I'm probably gonna go either this Saturday or Sunday - whichever day doesn't rain. Thanks

jonathan?? Anyways, leave the parking lot, cruise past the sober outward boundards, tip a beer, a couple mins later move past the chimneys (short cliffs on the ridge). About 20-30 mins after leaveign the lot there will be a trail on the right w/ a white rock in the middle of the trail and a root pointing right, take the trail. Its' pretty obvious. Drop down the hill till a 4 way intersection. cut left. drop down some nast bush wack shit, and keep going down the scree, trendind left. The mummy will be on the left. 40' of slab w/ a lot of chalk. Have fun. Mike
