Hi All,

Well those of us who stuck it out for the whole weekend have finally returned home. I, for one, had a great time. It was wonderful to see familiar faces, as well as meet lots of great new people. As for those of you who did not show up, give us your lame excuses.

The weather was beautiful and the climbing was great!! I have some great photos, and I will be sending them along to people soon.

Josh (Flamer), I think I have your camp chairs.

Doss and I showed up late on Saturday... got there around 10:00- 10:30, in part because it took us longer than we thought, in part because Doss' skills as a navigator suck. (He knows this... I spent the weekend reminding him. ;) ) Finally met up with Wigglestick who directed us to where MikeDano, his wife, Zen, and Flamer were climbing... we got lost getting there (got bad directions from climbers who thought Springer's Gulch was Teale Tower), but FINALLY got to where we wanted to be.

Mike and Kathy Dano took Doss and I up our first multipitch and definitely win Cool Kick Ass People Awards. :!: :!: We owe them at LEAST one good, cold beer. Also muchas gracias to them for talking us through some trad instruction.

We ended up so hungry at the end of the day we went down to get food and never made it back. Next time, we bring tents!

Geo and Martha, too bad we missed you. Sorry to hear about your finger. I showed on Friday and left late Fri afternoon. My weekend was bittersweet thereafter. I epiced in Eldo on Sat while soloing the ramp to Ruper but managed to onsight my first 11 on Sunday, also in Eldo. Maybe I'll see some of you in Moab. I'm not so sure that I'm going yet though. I met Fran (just_me), Charlie (climb4life), Kelly (online name?) and Lois (online name?), all of whom were very nice people.

Colorado Trip Awards:

Best Excuse: Mntgeo wins this one hands down. Who can argue with broken fingers? Not me. I almost bailed just because I was a little tired.

Best Home away from Home: Rockfox and Craig win this hands down as well. For those few who didn't get a chance to see it, their tent was the two-story one with the heated pool.

Best Ride: Tradkelly wins this one. Stealing your work van and taking it climbing is totally cool.

Best No-show: StevenMatheys. Who is that guy anyway? Didn't he start this whole thing? Whata sucker.

Best "I forgot my": Bradhill wins that one. He managed to do without his cams on Saturday, harking back to the yesteryears of passive pro. What a stud.

Best lead: Me, for my stunning, sensational, gripping and bold ascent of The Staircase, 5.5.

And finally, BEST STORY: Charlie (climb4life, right?) stunned us all on Friday night with the story of his high school science project. Didn't get to hear it? Well, all I will say is that it involves a porta-potty going 80 feet under water. HILARIOUS. The best part is that he got second place. I DEMAND a recount.

Also HONORABLE MENTION: Todd (Phaderus), who has managed to develop a climbing team for the school where he teaches. The team is soon going to be LETTERING in climbing, and is sponsored by just about the whole climbing industry. In an activity dominated by number chasing, idol worshipping and lame sport/trad debates, Todd has managed to do something that actually matters--he's used climbing to give his students a positive outlet for their time and energy. I applaud Todd's efforts and wish he and his students the best. Anytime you want to head out, let me know!

Yee Haw!!!

Good times. TracyRoach and I met up with Tradkelly, climb4life, Just_me, and Lois (?) on Friday Morning. Climbed a few routes on 11 mile dome and then Tracy and I wandered around springer gulch and eventually picked out a line that looked enticing. I climbed it and then sandbagged Tracy into leading it as well. By that time Tracy had to head back to Denver so I hooked up with Mikedano, flamer, and Marilyn to do some Bouldering at the Murray Boulders. Crossing the river was pretty exciting and some really cool problems were sent. Josh, thanks for shuffling the pads around so well when I got sketched at the top. Friday night was spent sitting around the fire telling lies. If anybody wants to know how to turn a porta-pottie into a submarine, Climb4life has all the beta.

Saturday, I had some non rc.com friends/newbies meeting me there so I didn't get to climb much with the rest of the gang. Got to spend some time with phaedrus, mikedanoswife, and kidwhocamewithphaedrus at the top of the first pitch of staircase. I couldn't stay Saturday night because I had to be back in Denver on Sunday to take care of a few things. But I am sorry I didn't get to hang out with the crew some more and I am sorry that skibby and mtngeo couldn't make it.

Mike,
Frances (JustMe) has your chairs. When we were packing up camp, we noticed that they didn't belong to any of us that were still there. TradKelly said that he THOUGHT that they were Josh's. Had I known that they were yours I would have taken them and dropped them off to you last night. They are safe and in good hands. Right LT?

MTNGEO,
Sorry to hear about your fingers. I was just teasing when I wrote that post telling you to, basically, take a nap, suck it up and get your butt over there. I was just looking forward to meeting you and I thought you were ducking out. Take care of those fingers and we will climb together someday.

There was at least ONE in the 40+ crowd that was there. AND he stayed the whole weekend (good thing because I was his ride back to civilization and I was staying  ). He's the one that brought the "2 story tent" (as Mike put it).

Hey all. More later, but here are some pictures from the weekend - http://community.webshots.com/album/69607834wyEdmQ

Lois isn't, so far as I know, an rc.c member. Just a cospgs community person that was looking for some climbing on Friday. If anyone wants to get in touch with her, PM me.

For my first outing with this community, ya'll get two thumbs up. Thank you Fran, Charlie, and Brad for climbing with me. I'll get on-rope with you guys again anytime.

Tracy,
That's entirely possible. It's a free web service, but it doesn't actually put any software onto the viewing computer unless you specifically download something (I slicked this computer last week and haven't got any problems with anything of the sort - but, I'm not running any anti-spy software right now, just zonealarm). Here's my suggestion to anyone who cannot view them - goto www.webshots.com, hit the 'community' tab, and search for 'tradkelly' in the 'find a member' search box (the lower of the two). Please, if anyone else can't view here, let me know and I'll figure out a fix. There are two cookies involved - one from webshots, which you need to accept, and one from servedby.valueadvertising, which you shouldn't (if you're picking and choosing cookies). It's possible that your anti-spyware program autoblocks stuff from the webshots domain, as well - look into the list of blocked domains and try to set webshots stuff to 'allow'.

I suppose it doesn't count when you are over 50. My daughter and I showed up for Saturday and had a great day of climbing. She managed her first 5.12, Anorexic Lycra Dog. She was grinning non-stop. Many thanks to Kelly for the use of his guide book. Good to see you again Fran and we'll see some of you in Moab. Keep your fingers crossed on the weather.

I had a great time with you folks!
Mikedano gets the "kickass belayer" award for not only giving me a soft catch on an RP, but also for his patience as I aided through a crux. Thank's Mike!
If you ever get the chance ask mike what it's like to almost get eaten by a bear! "I was screaming like alittle girl"
Charlie is pretty much the man in my book...not only did the guy make a WORKING submarine out of a Port-a-pottie, he had the BALLS to test it in Horsetooth res.!! I mean come on even if I could make a submarine out of a port-a-john(and I don't think I could) I would have headed to the deep end of the pool. Charlie you rock!
Also where the goat's really that fast...or were we that drunk? If Geo would have made it maybe he could've shown us how it's done...

First of all, thank you so much Mike for the award. Next time we'll have to see how many people we can get in that big tent

The weekend was great! Rock climbers are some the nicest people I have ever met. Everyone at this event was outstanding. I was so nice to meet all the new people. Brad and Frances, thank you for climbing with Andrew and I. You both ROCK! Kelly, you are damn funny guy. Listening to you around the campfire still makes me laugh.

Thank you all for a great time!

Whew, I finally made it back home to Phoenix. For my first RC gathering, it was definitely a trip!

Mike and Kathy Dano: Thanks for the chocolate, and being a guinea pig to my Moonshine. Your porn climbing calendar was utterly disgusting (where can I get one?) . And girly screaming men teetering in the treetops are way cool. But bears who eat canned beans are cooler (the extra gas must have upped his climbing ability). Hrmph, I couldn't even open my beer bottle without help.

Flamer: What can I say, firemen rock! :D But I've never seen anyone actually take two hours to aid a 10 foot section of a 5.6 slab climb. Come on, Teale Tower was practically a ramp! :P Oooh hey look, better watch out, I think I see a bird!

Doss and Todd: Thanks for waking me up from my nap in the pine needles. I'm sorry I didn't get to say anything more than hi to the two of you. But maybe you should be glad, lest you had become the subject of my smart ass mouth.

Andrew and Craig: When the bigtop went up and the flashy lights lit up the darkness, I knew the circus had finally come to town! Where'd you hide the sheep? :D Hey Craig, where's my "I'm a tree humper, not a tree hugger" picture? Let's show 'em how it's really done in Colorado!

Matt: Thanks for the memorable river crossing. I still can't feel my frozen toes. I'm sure Sasha is thanking you even more. Do you always dump your girlfriends in the river when you're done with them? :P

Kelly: You get two thumbs up the crack for recognizing (and actually DRINKING) a good wine when you see one! Anyone who marinates a steak for a week and remembers eating dog food in the decade old 3D game that started it all is a winner in my book. Good luck with the 14 year olds, Big Bosomed Boulder Babes, and/or Russian mail order brides.

Charlie: Your submarine story was definitely worth my long drive from Phoenix! One day I hope to have my picture taken with "The Hull" in person. And I think Mort is in love with me; I found his hairs on practically everything I brought with me! If you ever want to pawn him off on anyone when you go to Antarctica, the Vietnamese chef in me will greedily accept him into my wok, er, I mean home.

Fran: We all drew lots to see who would sleep in your abandoned tent, but all was forgotten when the new two story condo came into town. Nice tattoo, though!

P.S. Hey, I just got a new bathtub installed in my house, so I can make some brewski for all of you unrefined beer guzzling dirtbags at the next Colo gathering!!

By the way, who the hell ended up with all the Moonshine?

Sounds like y'all had a lot more fun than me. I was seated with 3 rows of 5 screaming babies on the 18 hour Atlanta - Johannesburg SA flight. The joys of international travel. Wish I could meet up with some of you in Moab, but i'll be *gasp* clipping bolts in South Africa.

I just realized, I never really gave my report on the trip.

It was outstanding. Everyone was great. This trip was a terrific idea (even though the organizer bailed).

The campfire stories were GREAT. We were instructed as to the standard procedure for encountering a minefield among other things (by the way, apparently, the standard procedure when encountering a minefield is to hurl yourself into the air 200 meters and disperse yourself over a large area. Who knew?).

Everyone I met there was top notch. Once we finished and got the camps broken down, we decided to go to the Mountain Shadow Inn for one last get-together. We had GREAT food and good conversation. We will have to do something like this again REAL soon.

Interresting to note, by the end, everyone left was prior military except for BradHill and to make matters worse.....the crag we went to was full of AirForce Cadets. Interesting enough, there was not ONE story that started with..."So there I was..."

For those of you that haven't seen it yet, we have a picture of TradKelly, Me, GuyInBoulder, and JustMe (actually she is taking the picture but you can see the rope running to her) at the top of a climb, all clipped into the same anchors striking a leisurely pose. It's classic.

Speaking of pictures, lots of people brought cameras. We should discuss figuring out a way so that EVERYONE can have access to EVERYONE ELSES pictures. I know I took a couple with JustMe's camera that I would like to see. If anyone HAS pictures that they would like to have burned onto a disc, let me know. I have a portable burner.

As for those who didn't make it (for whatever reason), you really missed out on a good time. Hope to see you there next time.

Mtngeo: Sorry I missed meeting you at the gathering! I was with Josh (Flamer) at Ouray in January, but I had to take off early and missed meeting you there as well. I heard rumors of the existence of a real live Mr. Potato Head, but I will believe it when I see it. You missed out on the goat molestation/climbing party last weekend! We did save a pretty goat for you, but it disappeared into Andrew and Craig's circus tent. :D

http://www.gooberclimbs.com/.../goat clinic 101.jpg

For those who missed the Colorado gathering, you also missed out on Mikedano's and Flamer's entertaining ministrations at the first ever Goat Clinic 101! On the left, Mike demonstrates which fingers and the exact position needed to lube the goat. Meanwhile, Josh gave us a lesson in hoof binding utilizing tools at hand (in this case, climbing tape), lest the cute young thang runs away from freaky climber/woodsmen who like to pet it in odd places.
