Well, i don't really think a climbing fall is cool!... And yes, they didn't die, but i bet they broke SEVERAL couple of bones! They were not climbing, they were fireman in a rescue training. (Esto es de puta madre! Ai!)

Did you notice what infact saved thier lives ?? HELMETS ! Safety first, no matter how dumb, or un-cool you think you look ! Vanity has no place at the crags, it's not a fasion show, you're there to climb. Let this be a lesson to all you who think it couldn't happen to you. Climb safe to climb another day !

It was disturbing, I have seen it before. Only positive thing is that it should humble you a little bit and stay in the back of your mind to make you a safer climber.

That's what they call "extreme video"? That is just wrong. I really hope no one gets a kick out of watching stuff like that. I watched a friend of mine fall 80 feet while rapelling. No one should ever have to witness something like that.

Wow, I mean it's not cool, and REALLY sucked for those guys, but...come on...isn't everyone desensitized to this type of thing by now? Maybe it's just me...too much bugs bunny in my childhood likely. It does give a pretty message about safety though. For a crash course in desensitization, visit www.rotten.com, but no eating before going there, ok?

Indeed, two firefighters performing a simulated rescue fell 70 meters and both suffered multiple fractures. Well gosh darnit, I knew taking four years of Spanish would come in handy someday! Seriously, though, that is some pretty grizzly footage to watch. As an aspiring doctor, I was abolutely amazed to actually see what terrible s**t the human body can be subjected to with the person whose body it is living to tell the tale. Remarkable. But if you are the sort of person who get's squeamish at the sight of people being injured, do yourself a favor and don't watch the video. I really wish climbXmedia were around so we didn't have to wander the net, only to find videos that aren't worth the time it takes to watch 'em.

This was posted on RC.com a while back as well, but under a much better premise that was 'don't watch this unless you want to see a severe accident and bodies flailing with lots of broken bones'. But for some who do things like rescue, EMT, paramedic etc. it is grizzly but at the same time hauntingly interesting. And yes, it was a rescue attempt where the either the cable attached to the helo or the attachment to their harnesses failed and dropped both men, so it's not a climbing accident but a simul rescue accident. I often wonder how they are doing these days and if either were ever able to walk again - from the looks of it at least one of their necks were broken.

That was disturbing. those should have warnings on them to prevent people who don't want to watch such horrible accidents lets hope we all learn from this so their pain is not in vain

I have personally seen 1 fatal and 2 serious accidents in my 20 years of climbing. In all three situations the climbers were new to the sport. These accidents occurred because they were unroped or runout when they fell. In retrospect, I have seen my safety behaviors improve, making me slower and more methodical. I didn’t enjoy seeing this video, but a great lesson can be learned when we truly take in the failures of others—often we do not change the way we do things until the consequences affect us personally or emotionally. I hope this makes you a safer climber. Regards, Greg greg@claimtraq.com

I found the story: http://www.apythel.org/exterior/accid/accid240999.htm It says that the pilot cut the cable because the helicopter was having problems due to strong wind. The pilot did not know that the two guys were hanging from the cable. It says that he did not see the signal. So, the accident was after all a miscommunication accident. It says that one of them suffered only some fractures (included a hip fracture), the other one had a punctured lung and head trauma but he was stable. The same pilot that cut the cable went to the rescue after switching to a "med-equipped helicopter" (however it does not says whether the same pilot lifted them again or not). The zone is called "Tuc de Crabes". I guess that the pilot thought that they were still anchored to the ground and that unless he cut the cable he will pull the anchor from the wall which would have caused an accident.
