holy shlt! Climb X Media is offline. i cant believe it. they have apparently run short of funds. this makes me real sad because cXm was a big part of me falling in love with climbing. the first time i ever went to the web-site i saw Chris Sharma climbing Realization. damn that was sweet, i was hooked from then on. Climb X Media made me want to be a better climber. i would pay to have access to the site again. would you? are you guys sad too :( . does anybody know if something can be done. i would hate to see this site never come back. man this sux

Not sure whats up. I was on that site this afternoon and it was still up with no indication of them droping the site. They were advetising a new road trip video that was supposed to be out next week. I am confused :?:

"The Road" will still be available via: http://www.movementfilms.com/ It's a shame they didn't get the support they needed from the climbing companies.

climbXmedia also played a major part in me becoming obsessed with climbing. I'm sorry to see it go. Glad I got to see the videos though.

Why do I feel like somebody just blasted through my favorite crag with sticks of dynomite?! This is really unfortunate... good luck to the cXm crew! I hope they will bring us more in the future. By far one the best climbing sites on the web. I only hope Josh Lowell will continue making climbing films!!!!

Did anyone manage to scarf up any of their vids before they shutdown? Anyone setup any mirrors yet?

:? :( I would sooo donate if they asked me, even though I'm poor, I would still give them some money. cXm is the only climbing vid website that I goto. I don't know any other, but still, cXm is the best. I so wish I can help out, along with other climbing gear companies or something... -Jack

I think they would need a LOT of climbers to pay a decent amount of $ every month, as the costs of running the site are pretty high. Things like bandwidth, hosting, related PC infrastructure costs for all employees, miscellaneous production costs, paying all their contributors, & having enough $ leftover that the core people (MR, MC, etc.) could survive on that income alone. I believe that their primary advertisers were paying ~5K per month to advertise with them, but that may have changed since I was dealing with them. The large sum of $ needed was probably causing many companies to be unable to keep longterm ad deals with them, as the margins in the climbing business are shrinking right now. Something had to give... It's too bad though - they were clearly an evolution in climbing media.

All y'all that asked why rc.com wasn't hosting videos? Here is your answer. If Josh Lowell can't make money doing it, I think it's academic whether anyone else can. I'm sad to say that my pessimism was justified on this venture, but that doesn't mean the guy didn't do a fantastic job and put his heart and soul into the work. Perhaps it was a bit ahead of its time. Rc.com costs money, sure, but we're trying to strike a balance between "must have" features (to please advertisers, big-dollar donators, and generally give back to the climbing community) and "would be nice" features (things people ask for, but aren't really willing to pay for). cXm's shutdown is an example of why videos always struck us as the latter. If people want to pay for video hosting, THAT we can do, and cheaply -- probably cheaper than you'd expect, actually. However, free videos aren't going to be viable if people just expect "advertizers" to foot the bill. At the end of the month, somebody's gotta pay up. If it turns out that people are interested in hosting videos on rc.com, we can certainly make it happen (and put them somewhere on the front page, just like photos...). However, there will be a small charge for that -- $9.95/month + any bandwidth spillover -- and it'd come down to whether people are willing to pay for the service. It's up to y'all.

I mourne for thee, cXm...not only were they good guys that actually answered their email, but they showed us (in mostly high quality video) stuff we couldn't see any other way. Motivated us through the winters (and the weekdays). Man that sucks... But I'm with Craggy, I scooped 2.5GB worth of vids as well. Unfortunately, MY bandwidth is not what it used to be...so my ftp information is on a "if you can find the post I made about it, then rape away" basis. Bandwidth is such a killjoy...but it's reality. Mike...

:( :( :( I was a climbXmedia addict! This really sucks :!: Personally, I would pay. I don't like paying for viewing online content, but climbxmedia.com was truly worth paying for. The videos were a constant source of inspiration. :?: Is there anything we could do to help get climbxmedia going again? C'mon people, think!

Well i have an idea. Have a comp for them.. If the community loves them so much, lets organize some kind of comp. that the proceeds go to climbXmedia. I'm sure you could get a huge turn out if people new it would go to climbXmedia. Also comps are always fun.

I wonder if some of the vids got uploaded to Kaza or Napster???? Anyone know? What a bummer nonetheless. I don't know what I'd do if this site went belly up. Oh yeah I do. . .work.
