Ok, i'm sure most of you have seen this photo on the front page of RC.com ... a few of us users think this image was pasted together from seperate photos... notice the climber has no shadow and seems a little "out of place" ... http://www.rockclimbing.com/photos.php?Action=Show&PhotoID=13677 so, who buys it? -b UPDATE looks like the issue's resolved... i guess i'm the crack smoker! http://www.rockclimbing.com/photos.php?Action=Show&PhotoID=13784 'twas a fun discussion, though, eh?

it is hard telling....the lack of shadow is kinda sketchy...plus only one picture was taken of this...kinda raises questions in my mind...

I think I see a shadow... or maybe I should stop drinking developper. It’s hard to tell with the angle of the climber and the grey colouration of the rock right around where he’s climbing.

Sweet vid. I'm no expert, but if you save the picture and zoom, the picture looks right. The res is low, but from what I can see, the climber does not look pasted in. And his hand, feet seem realistically planted on features.

In reply to: if you haven't been anywhere and seen nothin' , well i hope you at least have decent bandwidth http://www.c-files.com/BINCE/tt.wmv cool video maohaihuang! now i'm almost positive the photo is fake... this clip does show a climber coming off the very cliff that's in the photo - insane! (between 1:36 and 1:38 of the video)... if you pause the clip just right, you can see the climber in the video is much smaller compared to the cliff than the climber in the photo...

^Agreed Just cause you've seen someone try it does not mean its been done. Pluss the climber to wall ratio is a little odd. Oh and I've pasted my friend onto routes just because i found a pic of someone else trying it. I have not submitted those for that very reason

Photo analysis. Fun stuff! There is something odd about that photo but I think it is just one of those photos that for whatever reason happens to look sort of fake although it really isn't. I think it's the overhead light that makes things feel a bit flat. I can't find a single pixel that looks suspect. There are no remnants of another background around the climber. The aliasing that occurs shares colors of both the climber and the rock. The shadow on the left arm that is behind a stalagtite...the shadow on the left shin that is just behind the arete...everything is exactly as it should be. http://www.safanda.com/misc/zoom.gif

Yeah it's real. And I don't know how much validity this gives it, but I just spent a month in Krabi over January and saw people climbing this beast. They looked the same then as the pic does. It's real mates.

btw. I'm not above a little Photoshop fun. Here's a shot of one of Yosemite's new "Power" rangers in action. Watch out for them. They're bad ass. http://www.safanda.com/...anger_elcapspire.jpg The Thailand photo on the other hand is authentic.

I hope all the idiots who voted this photo a "1" are happy... Glad to know we have so many self-styled "experts" around here! At least David Safanda actually knows what he's talking about. Thanks David! (I spent quite a while looking at it myself at up to 1600X and didn't find anything either, although I'll readily admit that I don't do this kind of stuff for a living -- unlike David) Hardman Knott

Ya seen one power ranger, ya seen em all... Now that ethereal image of the ghost of the 18th century climber that died on the pinnacle on his john deere, now that's one for guiness book of indefinite records, if ever I saw one... hic -p

And it is also strange to see that this person climbing however good he might be and however awsome the route, is hanging on with a broken fore arm... Just above his elbow it's straight and then it just makes this 90 degree turn...

In reply to: Just above his elbow it's straight and then it just makes this 90 degree turn... then it exits the presidents arm and enters Governor Connaly below the first and second rib, then pauses for 1.5 seconds and drops 8 inches. Back and to the left people, back and to the left!!

Hey you freaks, why don't you just send me an email and ask me if it is real? It is, and i have about twenty images of that same ascent, starting from the stalagtite and ending on the finish hold. If you really want more images, send me your email and I will send you more images. B

Looking at it up close, my take is the shot is real. What makes it look odd is the climber is "shiny" which means he is probably sweating, cause he looks shiny in comparison to the rock. Thats what makes him look a little different or "outstanding".

The only thing that looks weird is the climber is really elongated. Don't know why he looks stretched out but other than that it looks real.

I make my living, in part, by compositing video and I use tons of photoshop tricks in my work. That said, I am about 99% certain the shot is real. The lighting would be next to impossible to match. If you look at the shadow angles coming off the guys pecs, head, and shins they match the angles hitting the rock. The sun is almost directly overhead, hence no shadow on the rock from his body. His shadow would be hitting the water most likely. The contrast of his body is due to his dark skin color and yes, he is obviously sweating so his body is very seperated from the rock texture and color. His body is not elongated, it is properly proportioned. I concede a 1% chance that it is fake and if it is I want to offer the photo doctor a job...

I'll leave the real/not real debate to the Photoshop experts, but no matter if it is real or not, that is one of my favorite climbing pictures.
