Well I just got laid off work.. EI here I come.

What a better time to go climbing I figure! Though all the gatherings seem to be in the states and an expensive plane flight away!

just wondering if there are any western canada gatherings happenings? I wouldn't mind driving to skaha or squamish...

Yup we have an informal gathering happening in Squamish in early August. No one's organizing it as of yet... so it has taken on a life of it's own. I believe we were talking the first week of August. There's a thread on it around here somewhere...

If you're bored in general, come to Squamish. There's always someone to climb with here.

There is camping but I couldn't tell you where's best to go because I don't usually camp when I'm up there. I'd suggest talking to some of the people that are coming up and find out where they plan to camp. And there's no problem finding climbing partners.

acrophobic,

If you find yourself in the Kelowna area, send me a PM here. I'm currently unemployed as well, so I could take you on a tour of some of the areas here.

Bobbi: A bunch of us are heading down to Canmore this weekend I think.. we will probably be staying in the alpine clubhouse.

Sheppe: Awsome. There is actually a west jet flight to there from Edmonton for only 200 dollars return. Sounds very tempting.

Oh!... I am in Salt Lake and so it would have to take a little more planning than that. But thanks for the info. It's just that I have a freind in Calgary and it would be a great way to kill two birds with one stone. Incidentally it would take me 13 hours to get there...Keep me posted.

Camping at Squamish is sweet, $9 per night, and you're a five minute walk from the boulders, right at the base of the Chief really. This is in the bc parks campsite, here:

http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/stawamus.htm

Can't say much about finding partners though, I went at a bad time (rainy, mid-week mostly, and early in the season). I'm certain you'd have much better luck in August! If you're driving though, bear in mind there's only like 15 drive-in campsites, the rest are tent only, no car.

allright .. here is my Proposal.

Ghost River Area Weekend!!!

Camping = FREE!
Climbs => enough of 8's and even lower Gear and Sport. Plenty of multipitch bolted and gear 10's 11's and 12's.

more climbing than you can shake a stick at!

I propose June 20 21 22. (the is a cleanup initiative on June 21.. It would be great if we could support that)or Mid July.

I haven't climbed there before, But I hope to get there this weekend to check it out .. it looks awsome.

Someone with experiance please respond and let me know what you think of this plan.

Whether there is a gathering or not .. I want to be there for the ACC clean up June 21. If anyone is going with a 4x4, I would appreciate a ride .. If not I guess I will be hiking, or riding in on bike.

I would super be up for camping/climbing in the ghost that weekend. I have to check and make sure I don't have anything else on. I'll also check with my climbing partners and see what's up as far as that weekend and the cleanup. I'll keep you posted as to what I hear.

Andrew,

Your actions constitute a gross violation of our EI code. Instead of being at the crags, you should be scouring the Help Wanted signs in town. I'm going to have to report you. :D

Seriously though, I was on EI myself for the last two months, and I spent much of it climbing and having a blast in general--best two months since college!! Unfortunately, I return to work on Monday  Enjoy the generous 1,500/month for the next 9 months. Look at it as a refund of your excessive taxation.

Enjoy...

$1500 a month?! I'm guessing you made considerably more than I did at my last job...I'm sitting at $1000 gross for the month...blah. I'm still wondering why I opted to take another job already, why didn't I wait until later in the year? Sigh....

Congrats on your luck. While I have the equivalent free time, my $$$ is low due to the cause of my unemployment (labour dispute = strike). It wouldn't be so bad if those damned crags were a little closer to home, but everything is $25+ in gas or up. Crap. Guess I'll have to settle for bouldering. Sigh.
