there was once i belayed my friend when he was leading a wall we were quite familiar with. as he was almost halfway through, he told me to watch him... of course i said yea presuming he was going to make a 'difficult' move. however he miss his next hold and he toke 'air'; with the rope btw his legs... he had his thigh badly burned n since then has been bouldering more often... may sound funny... but i guess he was lucky he did not have his head bumped...otherwise....

yes, getting flipped upside down happens to just about everybody if they play the game long enough. Keep the rope out from between your legs if at all possible, especially if you're moving diagonally or laterally between pieces of pro.

graniteboy speeks the truth. It happened to myself a few months ago. I was just pasted my 2nd pro placement and took a fall. Good thing my belayer was on his toes 'caues my head was about 3 feet off the ground. Not Cool.

Yea, last Saturday I took a mighty 3m plunge - head first! Me eyeballs nearly popped right out My back however wasn't so lucky, it did pop - a number of times. After a couple of sessions at the chiropractor it seems to be okay now. As graniteboy says, try to keep the rope out from between the legs ....... and if you can't, then wear a helmet - I was an inch away from being able to kiss my belayer on the forehead!

Take Jonoj's advice and wear a helmet. Make sure it actually fits you as well, the real problem in this situation is not falling head first towards the ground. But falling and hitting the back of your head against the rock. When you come to the end of your fall you will get flipped, and the force will cause your head to violently swing back and hit the wall. A woman in zion had a helmet on when this happened, but she had not fitted it correctly. When she fell and came to the apex of it her helmet flew off when her head was swung back.

[ab]Bottom line: Keep your sh*t together and watch what you're doing.

Well said compclimber, I couldnt have said
it better myself.
I aint worried about no freakin rope burn..
I'm thinking about the fact that the rock
is tougher than the back of my skull!!
And I cant afford to loose any more
brain cells!
