If you are having fun then you should most definitely stop and start doing something which is not fun to you.

Learning to solo aid climb is de riguer for doing walls. You can solo up a pitch while your partner is still cleaning and hauling the last one. So, as a practical skill, it rocks.

Another bonus is that you can learn to do hard aid pitches without having to have a belayer sit there for (sometimes) hours on end.

Just make sure you tell someone that you're headed off to the cliff. If something happens while you're soloing, it might be the only way you can get help.

oh, and I found doing this makes you more familiar with your gear and how to place it because you place gear so much. this has been helpful for me anyway

When I can't find a partner I head to a local crag and top rope aid climb. This is not as daring as your lead soloing, but it is fun none the less.

Keep at it,
Sam

I completely agree with you Phreak! And Apollo! Solo aiding(and just plan aiding!) are very good skills to have. Aid climbing will teach you the limits of your gear as well as make you more efficient at placing it.
The more you know.....

solo aid climbing is not fun and your mom wants you to stop. but if you are like me your memory has gaps in it and you continue abusing your body doing an activity that "sane" people cannot truely comprehend. but on a positive note you will never bail off a route because of your partner...unless you have multiple personalities. it's all good.

I LOVE solo aiding. It's so much fun and I fell just as safe as if I had a partner belaying me. My gri-gri is now my best friend! Ha Ha. I think it makes you concentrate a lot more and figure out problems by yourself. It's a great feeling of accomplishment too. You did it all yourself, no one else helped. Feels good. It just stinks when you have to hump heavy loads and haul them by yourself, that when you're wishing you had another body up there. Ha Ha.

Have a blast eveyone!
:P

I have done it a bit putting up new rt's and as I don't have a fancy self belay device it kind of sucked tying off short all the time. Just a lot of extra work. Anyone have sugestions as to how I can make it smoother?

sean-- the term "solo aid climbing" refers to the act of ascending some kind of tall rock using the various mechanical advantages of your gear while being belayed not by another person's belay device, but rather through any number of methods of self-arrest. The mechanics of just about every method of rope-soloing involves a lower anchor which inhibits the rope's upward travel and henceforth your downward travel and a device such as a silent partner or soloist to allow mono-directional rope travel on your end. Of course, You can solo aid climb without a rope, but the only usefull application of this is to save time.
