check this out next time you think you've taken a long fall on lead... Dean Potter whips 50' onto a 0.2 micro camalot in sandstone I've taken a 35' aid fall and it felt like forever sailing through the air. This is much, much bigger than that and... it looks like he sails forever.

What a great video! At the beginning, it looks like a multi-media textbook on good technique up a corner crack. Then, suddenly, your adrenaline hits you and your hands get cold when he falls. I only wish that I didn't know he was going to fall. If you'd simply called the post DEAN POTTER FREEING TOMBSTONE, the effect would have been better. Thanks for sharing it. You need the Apple QuickTime viewer to see it.

lol, this sucks. I downloaded the movie in about half an hour, but then I couldn't play it with any of my three movie programs. Tried downloading the quicktime components, and it kept corrupting the download. Then I tried upgrading quicktime, and it stopped in the middle, and when I hit cancel it said it was done, but it's not. Now I'm downloading the whole version of quicktime at 8mb, so in about an hour, I'll get to see this movie. I need cable. :x

Holy cow man, never really seen a fall of that magnitude, crazy to see how much the rope stretched. Good thing it did though.

Man, watching great climbers is mesmerizing, does anyone know where you can get you hands on other videos like these, of Dean, or Sharma and the like. That is one crazy frigin' fall, you gotta have some set between your legs to hop back on after a ripper like that. Imagine his belayer.

Nice video. I was able to clearly see that the top piece held. Dean falls clean, too. Didn't seem to brush the wall on the way down.

In reply to: Too bad that link doesn't work for me. I had problems with it as well ... I run Linux, and Apple hasn't provided a port for Quicktime. As a result, I can't open QT clips with a browser. If you're having the same problem, you can grab the clip at http://www.bdel.com/community/vids/fall.mov ... I grabbed the URL from the source of the page in the original link. Hope that helps! :)

Great clip. A couple of comments: First, careful viewing of the fall shows why a .2 micro camalot in sandstone holds a 50-foot near-factor-1 fall: the belay was very dynamic. Watch as the rope starts to come tight and notice how far he continues to fall. That's not just rope stretch; that's his belayer allowing rope to slide through the belay device to limit the force on that .2 cam. If you believe that dynamic belying is unnecessary or just a sport climbing thing, think again. The second point is the footwork. I've never seen anybody lieback a dihedral like that. Very interesting. -Jay

yeah, that is pretty wierd how he is back step cross stemming every move. i'll do it once in a while to try to send some of the fatigue to different muscles or whatnot, but doing it every move would be strange. from the photos i've seen, the geometry of the dihedral isn't excessively funky, so i am not sure why he sould be doing it that way. that would be cool if he logged on and explained it to us.
