I doubt it will ever happen. Olympic sports usually have some sort of head to head competition or a competition against some objective standard like time or distance. Something the common person can understand and can get excited about the fact that somebody ran faster than ever before or jumped higher than anybody else ever has. The general public coudl care less about whether the olympic athletes are climbing 5.13d or 5.14a. There are no world records to be broken and no drama of head to head competition.

true, most events are timed or have standards, or are simply head to head... but aren't there climbing competitions being held across the world ALL THE TIME? not all olympic events have records to be beaten though. many don't actually. pretty much just events that aren't waged in (near)completely controlled conditions. kayaking is an example. actually, even in controlled environments, records aren't always recorded; sprint cyclying and short track speed skating rely more on the head to head aspect. all i'm saying is that it's getting so popular that the whole fiscal aspect of the olympics is going to inevitably draw climbing in. or maybe not...

Still in kayaking they are racing against time, which is something a person who doesn't kayak can understand. Have you ever watched a climbing comp? They are incredibly boring. I seriously would rather watch curling.

well, even if you don't find watching climbing that doesn't mean it wouldn't/couldn't exist as an event. people find lots of events boring to watch. you think you see every event when you watch the network coverage? and there is speed climbing afterall... though preferably not along the lines of the x-games one where it was straight up and resembled more a ladder than a climbing wall. timed, lead sport climbing. certain amount of points for finishing... extra points if you skip holds w/either hands/feet... there you go. lots of ways to compete against each other. the desire to get extra points would lead to massive dynos... i think that would be pretty exciting to watch personally...

Curling is cool. Where else can you mix bowling, billiards, and household cleaning chores into a single event? :D

curling rocks. as for climbing on the olypics. it could be done. thered probably be three comps, difficulty, bouldering and dyno (with standardized holds). the dyno comp could have WR. but can you consider the effect of 30+ climbers at the vilage??? it would be party all the time. someone would be really upset.

If there was climbing at the olympics - chances are it would be speed and bouldering, actually now that overlord mentions it, dyno would be cool. Think about high jump to normal people compared to olympics, dyno records would end up at like 8m  :P

I think it'd be really cool. The excitement and drama of leading when it's onsight and the leader falls, the strategy of trad, using the least amount of gear in the shortest time, and sport just all brawn and speed. Bouldering would be kinda boring, because the people couldnt really feel the difficulty of the holds and it'd be over so fast. Dynoing would be kool just because it's mostly flight. And the scoring would be kool like neadamthal said. You'd get points for skipped holds, tough holds that you stuck but could've clearly chose another path and somehow scoring with cams like, using sketchy pieces or just using the least pro. Haha and this just popped into my head. What if there was something like tractor pulls. Judges add more and more weight on a climber and she/he tries to get the best time with so much weight on a boulder. That'd be kool to see guys/girls with 40 lbs packs racing up a boulder. Or maybe I'm just thinking about all this WAY too much...Oh well, it's 4:47 AM and I can't sleep.

Sport Climbing was slated to be an exhibition sport at the 98 Winter Olympics...hopefully someone will be able to clarify why it didn't happen as I can't recall

I know that people are working towards getting comp climbing as a demo sport for 2006 and then their goal is to get it in the next year for 2010 (coincidentally in Van/Whistler). I suspect the format would be similar to the worlds over in Europe (difficulty (sport lead style) and speed (TR)). Paul

In reply to: Curling is cool. Where else can you mix bowling, billiards, and household cleaning chores into a single event? :D Word. Curling's not a sport, it's a game. At least that's what Hemingway said. The Olympics (supposedly) celebrate the ideals of amateur sport. To me it means that they should include the sports that people actually enjoy doing. Instead they host events that are so contrived and specialized that there's absolutely no room for amateurs, and stuff that nobody in their right mind would ever want to do for fun! Excuse me, I'm going out to do some hammer throws in the park. I might go for a bobsled ride later if I still feel up to it.

In reply to: the chinese want tai chi in the olympics... talk about boring to watch!!! How do they plan to make that competitive? Would it be like watching the slow-motion scenes from kung-fu movies? We used to do that as kids; never thought it would become an Olympic event!
