dingus, nicely said- this is some good stuff that people should take to heart. I'd add that if you don't know the answer to these questions then just go out and have fun and ask yourself later.

A few other things to add:

All lead climbers should be ready for falls but I think there is some personal STYLE choices that keep some climbers from wanting to climb routes that they take lots of falls on-- basically to some they just consider it bad form (or otherwise) to dog up a route. To each their own.

I always try my best to leave my fear and worries of the unknown at the base of a climb-- but that could justifiably keep me off it too. Once committed I try and focus on technical and physical execution over fear but of course fear can still be there.
