Articles?...Good ones on this site Photos?...Great ones on this site Guidebooks?...None in the mag, quite a few decent ones on this site Interaction with like-minded, non 5.13 climbing brethren?...None in the Mag, lots here So to sum it up... Send $30.00 to the site, and check out the magazine from the library if there happens to be something good in it! By the way, I have a subscription to the mag, and it is really good for the first few days, then it gets old and put in the drawer with the othe 50 issues i have...

i think its worth the money actually... it has some really good stuff in it... im not subscribed to it though... but i do enjoy reading the few and occasional issues i get... my favourite climbing mag is "Rock" (http://www.rock.com.au) - an Australian magazine... but of course to someone in the US it would be kinda pointless... anyway.. im not sure if a subscription would be worth the money... but for me, the occasional issue does me fine

No. The magazine is a propaganda tool. It distorts reality. It is part of the over commercialization of climbing. As mentioned above, your $30 would be better spent here.

warning: I am going to Rant.. Climbing is a worthless piece of crap magazine whose pages are better relegated to wiping the sh*t off my ass. The writing is atrocious, the photography second rate, and a majority of the pages are advertisements. Now to be fair there are good contributors to the magazine who write worthwhile articles and advice. unfortunately such phenomenon occur so rarely its not worth your $30.

When the "tech tips" are things people should already know, thats when a magazine shows its true colors. Love the "Alpinist" though.

There's a whopping two articles in the current issue. yippee. My subcription is getting cancelled. R&I was 6 mo. ago. The quality of both has dropped off in the last year -- they both used to give beta to areas, travel info, lots of good stuff -- I have over 100 issues as reference for trips, etc. Now they go in the trash.

I've got to agree with polarwid- it mostly covers things either out of my range or off my radar. Actually, it can almost be depressing too.... look at all this kick butt climbing that you're not doing. :) Besides- I traded off all my mags & newspaper for broadband- better for the environment, no?

Take a peak at their readership & subsriber profile demographics.... I thought the funniest statement above was that is was all good up to a year ago! When the ownership of these rags passed from people that actually lived for climbing to the same corporate mentality that now runs Las Vegas Casinos, all was lost. R.I.P. Suzanne

In reply to: When the ownership of these rags passed from people that actually lived for climbing to the same corporate mentality that now runs Las Vegas Casinos, all was lost. It was actually all lost when our numbers increased to the point of creating a viable "climbing industry." We're all just mass consumers now. It was more fun on the fringe. But the gear is certainly better now. DMT

All of it is true true...been subscriber for 15 years now and certainly seen the mag change a bit. I still enjoy most Climbing's with SOME R&I's. It's just that I've gotten much pickier about which mags I buy and/or keep. So much of it now is super basic stuff.

Climbing, Rock and Ice = porn. Most porn isn't one huge product placement ad, though. Those climbing rags are. Disappointing. Alpinist, Canadian Alpine Journal = the bomb.

I thought this months Climbing was about the most poorly edited piece of crap I've seen them publish yet. Some very obvious, amature mistakes. Beth Rodden's journal was nice, but the rest of it was generally unreadable. Seems R&I has been the better of the two publications lately, but they both turn out some pretty boring stuff. Alpinist is by far a superior periodical. Ed
