I am a beginner attending a sport climbing course. To overcome the overhang portion of the wall, the coach instructs us to create an aider using quickdraws. It is then we can STEP on the so-called aider to climb. I just think that I can NEVER step on any equipment, am I right? :?: What about the idea of the so-called aider? :?:

Im curious as to why hes telling you to use this to get out past the roof instead of just climbing it, but yes it is ok to step on long slings as if they were aiders.

No sling, just quickdraws. I think he demand us to climb to the top and finish the belay bar procedures for low down. Those who cannot pass the overhang section then use quickdraws-aider.

C1 moves are de riguere for getting up routes that confound you. As long as ESPN isn't there, you can do whatever you want, short of drilling the gym wall. Try bringing over-the-shoulder slings and linking them with biners. That'll give you a ladder that is sorta like an aider. Once you start hanging in your slings, you'll be forever pushed towards the wonderful world of big wall climbing, and will leave the gym for good. All that business of ratings and crimpers and slopers and 5.zz gym routes set by the playground attendants will quickly fall aside when you realize that the Big Walls is where it's at. Get some Russian Aiders, and go up a wall.

tom's right, kiddies. there's more to climbing than gyms and sport. and while everyone enjoys our sport in different ways, the sooner you learn that having a couple of C1 or A0 moves in your bag-o-tricks -- along with some prussiks and a some knowledge as to how to tie off an injured leader, escape the belay, etc., etc. -- the better a climber you'll be. for you AND your partner.
