Just out of curiousity, cause I haven't been to many rock gyms. The music they play at the one I go to is techno, what I call "generic european club music". No offense to any who like it, but it drives me batty. Makes me feel like I'm on speed and I'm too focused on the annoying beat that is driving into my brain than on the wall I'm on. Just wondering if all rock gyms tend to use this kind of music (lots of people like to 'work out' to it). Also if your gym doesn't play the kind you like, what type would you want to hear? For some reason, I would love to hear some crazy heavy metal. It always makes me feel more active. You know, something that makes me feel like I'm kicking the wall's arse. K.

This is a particular sore point for me and my gym. I love my gym but every now and then they decide to turn the radio to Christian Rock stations and I can barely stomach it. I have nothing against being religious but I cannot handle it being forced on me while I'm trying to focus on my route or workout. I've actually left because of it.

Depends on the gym you go to. The one I work at is really open to music variety; the members can bring in CDs and drop it off at the front desk for us to play. We've had everything from the jungle and drum&bass stylings of Aphrodite and DJ Dara to some of Oakenfold's heart-thumping melodic trance, to the soothing sounds of Jack Johnson and Bob Marley, to System of a Down, and even the Shrek Soundtrack.

If my GYM plays something that makes it hard to focus on climbing I use it to learn how to focus when annoyed ,Never works so I use ear plugs !!

The gym I used to go to in SLC (shall remain nameless) played some of the most annoying generic cable broadcasted techno evah. The stuff drove me crazy with thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump thump. I mean just about anything else would have been fine: country, rock, classic rock, punk, semi-good rap, bluegrass, I don't care. But, generic cable techno blows hard. Anyway, I only climb outside these days, the scene at the gym was just tooo much.

The only thing that has annoyed me enough to ntice about the music at our gym is that every now and then they break out the CD of some guy who can't rap. He has no inflection in his voice, he just talks along with the beat, and the beat isn't even all that good. Drives me crazy. Other than that, the music is fine. It's a good mix.

Most of the time, my local gym plays the radio... local alternative rock station, which is tolerable. They do allow guests to pop CDs in so long as nobody complains. My wife once brought in the soundtrack from "The Matrix" which was a big hit! Once though, someone put in Grateful Dead CD... everyone got really lethargic and sleepy, the boulder cave emptied out, and the drowsy climbers seemed content to just sit and stare at the overhanging walls (and their own hands) in wide-eyed wonder. Perhaps that was not the best choice.

In reply to: I would love to hear some crazy heavy metal K. I DEFINATELY AGREE! at my gym they play either dance/breakbeat/techno/trance/electronica... i dont care what its called... i dont like it... or they play Cantonese pop music... which is worse... and i dont think theyd let me change it to anything heavy.. i think they like it just like it is...

For me, I can usually go with something hard rock or trance techno. The gym I go to now usually goes with commercial alternative stations, so it's not bad; my partner and I can deal with it. Two interesting (and off-topic) stories regarding music and gyms: 1. Violent Femmes in the bouldering cave: We couldn't stop laughing; everybody was falling off of simple problems and having a hard time concentrating. Good thing it wasn't a busy night. 2. One particular Saturday, during a birthday party for some little kid climbers, someone decided to play Incubus - Make Yourself. Unfortunately, nobody could remember that the language wasn't kosher for the song "The Warmth", and the second time through the chorus we hear, "Not everyone here is that f*cked up --" and it cuts off completely, leaving the last two words echoing throughout the gym. Classic.

I think gyms should play a wide variety of music, its only fair. also, maybe a little of topic, but I absolutely hate when one of the employees plays their favorite CD over and over for months :x

First off....strongbad rocks the house  Second...I am lucky enough to climb at a gym where we are allowed to play what we want. Its a small place and the guy who owns it is great. different systems for bouldering room and lead wall...so when there is a b-day party...we can still have it cranked in the cave. The strokes got alot of play and just about everything else you can imagine except rap and country. If you are ever going to be in the Albany area check out http://www.centercitysportsplex.org/rockgym/ Andy is a very cool guy. Peace Jeremy

So it kind of seems to me that it would be good to have a good mix. The techno for those, and a Dead song thrown in. Some heavy metal for the boys and a Dave song for the girls. A Phish, some disco, some old-school oldies, an eighties song, a Johnny Cash or Garth, an Outkast, some Jesus-lovin, a Miles Davis, and Cyndi Lauper. Then some Stones (gotta have the Stones). Here's a thought. Someone should put together a solid climbing mix CD and sell it here on rc.com for dirt cheap. Or at least just send me a copy and I won't tell anyone that the music is copied and stolen. And GO CHICAGO CUBS!!!! Holy COW!!!!
